    I've finally bitten the bullet and purchased a Redark SBi12 to control my second battery and decided to put it in the front and not in the rear as a portable. This gives my the option of a third portable battery later. Question .... what is the more popular choice of battery ( AGM or wet ) to use? A friend is trying to convince me to get a Yellow Top but I would like some options, as I have no idea of what are the better batteries. It will be used primarily to run my fridge and some LED lights.

    How are you going to charge it when the vehicle is not running over extended period? AGM's charge quicker and to full capacity than your standard wet cell deep cycle battery in most cases. AGM might have less Amp hr but because they charge quicker and you can use them for cranking (I'm referring to your yellow top and the fact you wish to mount it in the front of your vehicle) I find you get more bang for your buck.

    I now run a Optima yellow top (D27F) for both cranking and aux battery with no issues.

      That's the sort of info I need to know. I was thinking about using my solar panels to charge it if I'm camping for extended periods or using my generator if needed. I'm also thinking of wiring to the rear for future use of a portable battery.

        If I didn't have a winch I would just have a portable battery where I can charge it at home, put it in the back of the vehicle when camping etc and charge it using a generator and or solar panels when away from home. You could place the battery next to the fridge which reduces cable length and voltage drop. With the Optima AGM battery you can have it sit up to 12 months without charging. If you had a boat you could use an AGM in that and when you go camping crab it and use it for camping. Reduces your overall cost of buying multiple batteries and maintenance.

        Just do some research on what brand and type of battery you wish to get. Things to look out for are:

        Amp Hr rating (AH)
        Cold cranking amps (CCA) if you require it for high current applications (winching/starting, bearing in mind the D4D requires about 700CCA battery)
        Size and type of battery (deep cycle / cranking or both)
        Operating and storage requirements
        charging rates
        Construction and weight of battery (construction plays a factor if driving on rough roads or using it in your boat in rough weather and the type and orientation of the battery terminals)
