  • Calcium Starter Battery - Allrounder MRV70

I'm looking at getting a new Supercharge Allrounder MRV70 (to replace the same battery) as my auxillery battery for an upcoming trip.

I'm thinking of using the current Allrounder MRV70 that is installed as a replacement for my starter battery. The MRV70 works great as an auxillery battery, but I don't know if it would work as well as the main starter, being a calcium/calcium battery, even though Supercharge have indicated there won't be any problems.

Can anybody advise if they use one of these batteries as their starter battery or if they could forsee any problems, specifically in relation to fully charging the battery. I do regularly maintain the batteries using an 8-stage charger if that makes any difference.

    Many thanks!

That battery will be fine , i think it is their alternative to the AC Delco DCM

JGD, It's probably one of the (oops... can of worms) best value for money hybrid batteries you will buy.
The local Supercharge supplier sells them for $180!!!! to the public.
Have had the MRV70 in both of my Bby's and have been used as both main & Aux batteries no problems at all.
For me it was a no brainer, and when these eventually die I will replace with the same.

They are a great battery unless you have a D4D...

As with any calcium battery, a good boost charge once a month will keep them in top condition.

Thanks everybody for your replies. I'll grab a new one and switch the current one I have as the auxiliary over to the starter.

In my experience the MRV70 is far more suites as a crank/aux battery. I worked for Supercharge Batteries for 4-1/2 years and the problems we got with them was when they were only used as an auxiliary battery, if they are cranked as well they seem to prefer that and last much longer.

The best aux battery would be the Absorbed Power ones Supercharge do but if that's out of your price range then a D70Z AmpTech deep cycle is the way to go for an aux only battery. Much cheaper then the MRV70 and apart from the Sea Master MFM range it's one of the best batteries they make!

Thanks for the info jhiace, I swapped my aux from an allrounder to an amptech for the reason you mentioned. Wasn't planning on fitting an allrounder as a cranker but may think again about that as they're a good cheap battery.

                No worrie,

For cranking consider the MFM70 if you can fit it, they crank really well and a fully sealed maintenance free battery that are designed to take a flogging plus the have the extreme threaded terminals making it really easy to fit any accessories too. They are a little dearer but th plates are welded top and bottom preventing any internal damage when off road on the rough stuff.

I have the MFM70 cranking my petrol 120 and have the d70Z connected to the maintain charger til I get the chance to install it.

I actually have the MRV70L, which has the terminals the same way round as the standard Prado battery, so there aren't any problems there.

When I wired the second battery I got the 'L' version with the view of moving it to the starter side at some stage.
