  • Trailer wiring loom

    Hey guys,

Yesterday i installed a reversing camera and electric brakes into a lady's car and noticed when i was testing it all that the blinkers at the standard Toyota trailer plug weren't working.

So I did the usual testing back to the two relays near the jack and found that when the blinkers were on the signal was getting sent into the relays and they were 'clicking' like they should but the signal wasn't coming out of the relays. I changed the relays and still the same thing.

There is an orange and white wire also going into the relays and from what i can gather the orange is possibly some sort of additional power source which has no power, does anyone have a wiring diagram for these factory towbar packages so that i can trace this wire to know what it is actually meant to do..

    Any help appreciated, thanks.

          G'day jhiace
No diagram but had issue before with the trailer plug wiring. Turned out that the white wire in the jack compartment where the relays sit, needed to be earthed and has an eye crimped onto it that can be screwed under one of the jack mounting bolts. Unearthed it was lighting up the reversing lights when indicating with trailer plug fitted.
          Cheers

I'll add to this thread rather than start a new one...

A few weeks ago I hooked up the CT for the Janowen Hills Weekend trip and had myself a little short circuit due to the anderson plug shorting it's self out. Well, not so little... made a some nice smoke signals with it.

Anyway, I thought the fuse had done it's thing... which it has in regards to the dual battery BUT... I now have no trailer indicators. Tail and Brake lights work just no turn signals.

The relay is clicking but no turn lights on the trailer.
The boys at Wynnum Towbars had a look today and they said It will be a blown fuse for the power to the relay (hopefully) but in the few minutes they had to look at it couldn't find where that would be.

So, any ideas on where the fuse would be for the power to the factory wiring harness relay for the turn signal?
It's not in the dash cluster or under the bonnet.

120 2008 GXL if that makes a difference.
              Cheers, Leon

                bump...

Still haven't found the time to pull the back of the car apart but would still like to know if anyone has a diagram or knowledge on this one?
                Cheers, Leon

                  Trailer wiring loom

So, after pulling the draws out of the back of my car and checking the wiring loom behind the left side trim for an hour or so... I admitted defeat an got an auto sparky to look at it.
He phoned Toyota for a location of a power supply fuse an they were no help. After about an hour of testing he finally traced it back to a fuse UNDER THE BONNET!!! Argh!!!!!!!
I was certain that I'd checked every damn fuse under there but sure enough, it was one of the unmarked fuses in the main box
Damn expensive fuse that one

Hey snaga, any pics indicating which fuse in the engine bay? I've gone through all my fuses and all seem fine. Still can't get the bloody indicator for the trailer working, the relays are firing but nothing else, that orange wire doesn't seem to have any power...

For everyone out there here is the location of the said fuse in the engine bay, completely unmarked well not now......

The guys who did my tow bar never did this fuse. Not to sure if it should be 10 or 15 a will speak with Toyota tomorrow, but for the moment it has a 15a.

That's the one... Took a pic yesterday but haven't had a chance to upload it yet.
Mine had a 30a fuse in it but the auto sparky didn't see the need for that high a fuse so replaced it with a 20a.

                          Hey snaga,

Just spoke to bta tow bars, they say with a genuine harness which they suspect I have by my description it should be running a 30a fuse, so I better change that. Prob will just run a 20a like you tho. 30a seems overkill

                            Hi guys,
Where abouts are the relays located in the rear?
I've got a similar yet slightly different issue with my trailer lights.
When my trailer is connected, both indicator lights are working as are the tail lights when the headlights are turned on, but when the brakes are applied the brake lights on the trailer are not coming on. The other odd thing which happens is when I turn the headlights on and the tail lights are illuminated; I indicate right, no problem yet when I when indicate left, the left indicator light does not flash but instead the brake lights flash??? This only happens when the headlights are on.
I opened up the plug on the trailer and the socket on the prado to inspect for any corrosion. There was a little, which I've since cleaned out and apart from that it all appears good?
I'm wondering if there could be an issue with the relay and or the fuse mentioned earlier in this thread.
The socket is genuine and was fitted at the dealership when it was initially purchased.

Any help and or insight would be appreciated.

My 90 does a similar thing. Trailer with globe lights works ok, Boat trailer with LED lights works ok. Trailer with LED lights - everything works individually but when headlights are on brake lights dont work. It was suggested i needed load resistors so i have now got one on all lights on trailer but that made no difference. Works fine on 150 series and mates Subaru.
