  • Rough suspension question

    Hi guys,

I have had Koni shocks and Lovells springs fitted now for 10 000 km. I had HD put in the front and medium in the back. Can anyone provide some sort of description of how their vehicle rides with a similar set-up? Mine is ROUGH. If anyone has used the hook point access road on Fraser recently they will know how bad the corrugations are. It was almost unbearable to drive on at 20 kmh. Further, on the highway after an hour on the New England and Cunningham hwys, I'm feeling every jarring depression and bump in the road. I'm running tyre pressures of around 35 psi warm because any higher and it's unbearable even more so. I was expecting much better from this combo and was aware that the hd in the front would be firm, but they shouldnt be like concrete.

On a side note, the bloody things are squeaking like some small marsupial is caught in the springs. Has anyone else had this and how did you fix it?

Any suggestions or help would be great. At this stage I'm looking at going back to standard springs because I'm sick of it being shit. If you read my build up you'll get what I mean!

    Hey Reida,

I've got HD front and MD rear, but different gear. I run 38psi on the road and my ride is a little harsh in the rear only when unladen with the 3rd row seats removed, but nothing like what you're experiencing by the sounds of it. The front is good though and is smooth over man hole covers and other bumps in the road, etc. I've got to take speed bumps easy in shopping center car parks with the rears though or I'll know about it.

I've driven the Hook Point access road many times and in any car it's bone jarring at 20km/h. It'll feel like your car is going to shake to bits at such a slow speed over those coarse corrugations. The key to smoothing them out a bit is to drive faster on them so your tyres skip over the top of them more instead of riding up and down each individual painful corrugation... Plus you'll get off that road much quicker in the process. The speed limit there is only 50km/h due to the blind corners, so the ride is still fairly rough at that speed, but better than 20km/h or less that's for sure. If you could drive them at 80-100km/h they'd be fairly smooth.

Are your bushes in good nick? Perished bushes can be awful & rough to drive on and can squeak quite loud too. They can also go "ting, ting!" as you hit bumps in the road and turn your car around a corner at a slow speed.

I was also going to ask if you were sure you weren't supplied HD front springs meant for the diesel model? That would've explained a lot. The weight over the front axle of diesel's are heavier than petrol's. But then I noticed you have the diesel model.

      Hey Brett

Yes all my front bushes have been done but only the sway bar linkages on the rear. I did notice that speed helped on Hook pt and it was better for sure. One thing I've noticed is that at full right lock I get a clunk when I go over a bump at the front. Regardless, I don't think that has any bearing on the overall ride. I'm looking at king springs at the moment and going raised but hopefully as close to standard as possible in spring rate.

The clunk at full lock may be the cast iron metal to metal steering bump stops need a bit of grease......
Sounds like your front coils may be too firm, or not suit the valving of the strut

35psi on corrugations ?? let the tyres down to 26/28 psi , they are part of the suspension as well .

If u have HD front I assuming u have a far bit of gear on the front of the car?

I think it all comes down to miss matched suspension, having one brand of springs and then another brand of shocks does not work too well, for many years I have been telling people to only ever buy a matched suspension kit. This is the only way you will ever get a compliant ride, thebest way to describe it is like the ride will always be firmer than standard, but will be softer as you will not be bottoming out on the bump stops. If you go for a too stiff a spring or shock, then your ride will suffer.

Not going to fix your problem with what you have, but if your thinking of changing I did run OME on two of my 90 series and was fantastic even over corrugations, you will nearly always get some shaking etc with any vehicle and suspension set up but also depends on the severity of the corrugations but in general both my 90's were great. the worst thing for me was the bloody dash ready to fall out on the diesel use to rattle its arse out even with tyres let down and even when running the standard suspension when I first bought it. I certainly do not have any connection with ARB but will swear by their OME and both my 90's were running all the usual gear we run bull bar, dual batts, etc but I didn't have a winch on either of them like yourself. I was running medium all round. They did say if I was going to run a winch I would need to upgrade the front with heavier springs......It shouldn't be riding like it is as mentioned above, maybe mismatched components ??.............Cheers Steve

Tyres were 20 psi. Not surprisingly, saw 2 200 series bogged- one on inskip and one just off the barge on hook point. Snatched one out after he let his tyres down. All the gear and no idea.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, considering swapping out the hd's first and seeing if that improves it.
