  • Difficulty with Steep Hill Starts, Lacking Torque at Idle - Manual

I've been speaking to a few people about this lately, and I dont know if its just me, or if my D4D is down on power a little, or what it is. However I've been driving it a bit lately and noticed that it is very very difficult to get started doing hill starts on reasonably steep hills of late. The biggest problem appears to be the lack of torque at idle, meaning to get started I have to slip the clutch to get boost before the car will take off without stalling.

I dont know if the Prado is just a little down on power for some reason at the moment, or if its always been like this and I'm only noticing now. I'd be interested to see how many other people are having this problem. Once its on boost its fine, but the dead zone between 800 rpm idle (approx) and 1500-1800 rpm when boost is available, is horrendously sluggish.

A recent occasion this happened was with 6 Adults and 1 Child in the car, doing the xmas light runs in Sydney, and i had to switch to low range to do a hill start. This makes me wonder how people tow big vans in manuals with this problem??

    Appreciate any feedback!

had to slip it into low......... na thats mad, my 1kz struggles a bit, but like you said a few revs is all you can do.
Id imagine d4d should be a lot better and surely no need for low range.......?

I have a manual 150. Never experienced this problem in 22,000 km of driving with some decent amounts of towing a heavy camper trailer as well. As one of these 'old school' type diesel fitters that I am, I would be looking at the basics first. Fuel pressure and air intake is where I would start.

1] Inspect the air filter for blockages and if in doubt, replace the air filter with a new Toyota air filter assembly.

2] The secondary fuel filter may be starting to block up and strangle the flow of diesel to the fuel pump, hence to the engine.

3] The primary fuel filter (located near the rear tank) may be also starting to block up, due to age or contamination. If in doubt, I would change it also.

From there, you might have to resort to some of that new fangled electricy doohickeying and get a 'new age' type diesel fitter fella to plug in a Toyota scan tool and have him check the common fuel rail pressures and look for any logged fault codes that may be causing the ECM to derate the engine output, which may show its self as a lack of torque.

Just a few tips, but if in any doubt... Ask ########## ! He won't steer you in the wrong direction

Ryzz something sounds wrong there to me, i find when i take off from the lights (especially on hill starts) if i put my foot down my d4d auto launches and im usually a couple of car lengths ahead of the pack within the first 20 meters or so, i assume its due to a combo of the low down torque & constant 4wd. I'd be getting yours checked out.

Reviving an old thread as I’ve got something similar going on.

2010 diesel manual that has no torque low down in the rev range. It’s not an air filter problem but that’s as far as I’ve got with investigating. It otherwise drives fine but is laggy off the mark and isn’t able to idle up even moderately steep inclines. It certainly behaves differently to other diesels I’ve driven that are almost impossible to stall.

On road it’s not really an issue but off road it hampers the vehicles ability significantly. Towing a camper I’d actually be worried about becoming stuck at the bottom of a technical hill or doing damage needing to use excessive speed to keep forward momentum.

It is carrying a fair bit of weight and a 3” exhaust but something seems amiss. Has anyone experienced similar behaviour?
