  • Door lock/open sensors and Le Mans Toyota Footscray (Melbourne) servicing...

    Hey All,

Has anyone had an issue with the door lock/open sensors on the 120 prado? Apologies this is a bit of a rant but I am rather annoyed with Le Mans Toyota as explained below...

With my two rear doors, if you unlock the car and open the door, the light doesn't come on. Further, if you dont open the door after 30sec (or whatever it is), the car locks itself as it thinks you haven't opened a door. Anyway, the issue has been around for a while and sometimes I forget about it because I open another door to put things in the car etc.

The problem is though if I open the rear door to put my daughter in her seat, and it takes longer than normal the doors may lock. Then sometimes you put the keys down (not ideally) in the car... and of course I'm worried that I will lock our daughter in the car with the keys inside! Not exactly very safe, which is why I now always open a front door and try not to put the keys down in the car. But mistakes happen.

Anyway, I took it to Le Mans Toyota in Footscray (Melbourne, where we bought it) to get it serviced, and I asked them to check it and they said they reset the central locking and it was all good. But of course, it wasn't and the problem was still there. Pretty sure they never even looked at it.

So after a few months as I had no time, I eventually get my wife to take it back. I called them and told them they already looked at it and said they fixed it, but they didn't, so can they please take another look.

Anyway, my wife tells them the same when she drops it off. This is the only reason we drop it off there, no service, just look at the door sensors.... Anyway, when my wife picks it up they say. "No that's actually a standard safety feature, it's supposed to do that." When she argues and explains how stupid that is, and unsafe they say, "well who ever did your battery wiring must have broken a wire or something". So they completely contradict themselves. They don't even try and fix it. I did the wiring and I am sure I didn't break any wires or stuff anything up.

So when she brings the car home, I get out the voltmeter and low and behold both sensors have power to them. Simple check, wires are ok, power is on. Next check is the switch. So I remove the sensor switch and swap it with a front door sensor switch. Lock the car, open the door, bing the light comes on. Doors don't lock! Amazing. Check the front door (with the rear door sensor) and the doors lock themselves...

It took me all of less than 5min to figure out what the problem was and fix it. All I need now is two new switches.

Now I don't think I will ever take the car back to Le Mans Footscray. Can't believe how useless they are.

Has anyone else had problems dealing with them? My car is on a lease so are there any places that are half decent that I can take it to get it serviced in Melbourne??????

    Ok. my rant is over....

    Cheers

    Phil

Hey Phil, these guys used to be really good a few years back but in my years I have found that it depends on the relationship you have with the 'service manager' that receives your car. There was a guy by the name of Chris Trinh there at one stage, he was great to deal with.

A gross generalisation, you get whatever mechanic happens to be available at the time, this could be a veteran or a wet behind the ear apprentice and like most things these days they will be pressured to get through cars as quick as possible. if it is not in the standard manufacturers book, most don't have the general fault finding experience of yesteryear.

I now use a local Ultra tune guy over here in South Morang, but that may not be much use to you over there in Footscray. Again, great guy, owns the store, does his own work, seems to know his stuff. But same rule applies you need to make the time to form a relationship with any of the guys who potentially have your life in their grubby, albeit skilled, hands.

    Best of Luck

      Hi phil
I brought a new toyota there in 1993, had it two hours and rang And told them the gear box was notchy. Was told to give it time to run in,at the first service had them look at it to be told nothing wrong with it, at three month old the gear box was rebuilt at three months and five minutes it was booked in for another rebuild. The gear box was rebuilt three times over the next 18 months (+ new clutch at my cost) each time i drove it around the block and came back in to rebook it in to fix the gear box until l told them l wanted the victorian service manager to drive it and they would not get the car until he drove it. New gear box two days after he drove the car (+refund on three clutches)... now l buy my toyotas from any one other that le mans toyota.. The last two toyotas i have bought from MCT and have had no problem at all..
      Cheers

          Hi Phil,

It is strange that two switches should fail, have you tried putting everything back
to normal and see if their still faulty as it may have been a loose /dirty connectors?

          Cheers

I ended up buying these genuine yesterday and voila, problem fixed. $32 per sensor for anyone else with the drama. I put the two new ones on my front doors as they get used the most and the 2 ones that were in the front doors in the back doors.

Sometimes a squirt of contact cleaner is all that is need. The switch relies on a piece of metal making physical contact with another piece of metal. Should dirt or dust get in there they may not make physical contract.

                    Hi All,

Phil, Have you raised this issue with the Service Manager verbally or in writing?
I find if you do that, the problem with be addressed internally.

I done it a few times, when I haven't been happy with the service of any vehicle, and I do then get action.

FYI, I bought mine from Le Manns Toyota, Deer Park.
They did service my Prado until warranty expired, now I get it done my a local company in Geelong.
