  • Engine won't start

I was on a job in the city and returned to the car to find that it wouldn't start . With foot on the brakes and pressing the start button all the warning lights were on on the dash but it wouldn't start . The steering column lock motor activated but that was it . I checked the crank batt and it seemed ok so I bridged the aux batt across it but still no go . I tried disconnecting the crank batt thinking that this might reset the computer but no go .
I have the extra Tojo cover so called them but the problem was that it was NYE and a lot of Sydney streets were blocked off . I told them to go via Clarence St which was open but the serviceman gave up and declared it impossible . This was after waiting hours mind you and me actually giving him instructions on the phone for how to get there to avoid the road blocks .
Anyway I was about to give up and try and get home by some alternate means so I locked it up and started to walk away when I thought that I'd give it another go . I unlocked it and yes it started !
This then makes me think that it was an imobiliser issue which was stopping it from starting . The fact that I locked and unlocked it must've disabled the imobiliser . Something that I didn't think to do earlier on .
Ok a few questions for the learned ones :

Is there a reset sequence ? I tried holding the transponder next to the start switch , this didn't work . I think the 200 series reset is to press the start button 5 times , what about the 150 D4D ?

If this had've happened the day before we'd have been up xxxx creek as we were camped down on the Turon where there was no phone coverage and Tojo Roadside Assistance will only come if it's 2wd accessible !

Does anyone know what the start button led colours/flash sequence means ? The led in the start button flashed green and sometimes went orange .

    Cheers

    Ross

I've heard on other push button start cars, the brake pedal sensor sometimes fails to detect that you are pressing the brake and so the car refuses to start. The solution is to give the brake pedal a good shove. Could this have been your issue?

        Hello,

I had the same immobiliser problem with my LR Discovery, it used a normal key but when the ECU is asleep a key which cranks the engine does not help. Locking up and unlocking always fixed my issue.

        regards

I'm sorry I cant suggest anything to help you out, and I hope you get it sorted and that it's not an expensive fix.
Your situation is an example of the issues with modern vehicles. They rely on so much technology ( sensor, CPU's etc... ) that they are inherently unreliable. It can only take one sensor or switch somewhere to immobilise it. Yes our new vehicles are safer and more economical to run, but it's very hard to find a tech with diagnostic laptop in the middle of nowhere, or even in the middle of a city.
Good luck with sorting it out.

I've had it happen to me once, turned out to be the steering lock hadn't disengaged.
You can find the meaning of start button flash sequence in owners manual, sorry can't remember what page but it took me a while to find.

I have had the "no start" issue when there were two people in the car that both had different Prado 150 keys on them....
Car would not start....Key light flashing... Had to touch the key to the start button to re-set....

not relating to your issue by the looks of it..

              Bernie.

This happened all the time on the mine prados the interlock switch on the brake pedal goes. On site this is ususlly fixed with a bypass. Symptoms include random non starting which seems to get progressivly worse.

Another trick i have found with immobilisers on other vehicles if they go weird is to disconnect they reconned the beterry terminals and this seems to reset it all

Also, make sure Iphone is not in close proximity to keyless fob (else keyless fob becomes inoperative).

Furthermore, I saw this happen in the car park on Mt Wellington in Tasmania, where a few of the keyless entry vehicles had key entry failures due to the radio/electrical interference from the nearby transmission towers. There are even signs that the council have erected warning drivers that radio/electrical interference may interfere with keyless entry and remote entry mechanisms. I'm not saying that was your issue, but in this instance, drivers had to either hold the key right up close to the door, or use the small manual key hidden in the key fob to enter the car, or try and shield the key and ignition switch with a small length of alfoil to reduce the electrical interference. Its worth remembering because this could happen if you park under high voltage powerlines or near radio/TV/microwave transmitters etc.

Thanks for all the info and feedback guys . Re the mine chap with the brake switch problem , nothing happens until you press the brake pedal , then the warning lights come on in readiness for an engine start . I had all that including the steering unlock motor, just no start .
If the engine start stop light flashes orange it's indicating a fault .

I've noticed on p571 of the owners manual called "emergency start function" :
                        Hand brake on Park selected
Set "engine start stop" to accessory mode.....You do this by not pressing the brake pedal and press the button .
Push and hold the "engine start stop" switch for about 15 secs while pressing the brake pedal (auto) .
I haven't tried it but will keep it in mind .
Does the engine management hold previous fault codes that have cleared or only the current fault ?
Does the Scangauge display only the current or previous fault codes ?
Would the Scangauge have showed anything whilst the engine wouldn't start ?

Is there a system reset procedure for the engine management as disconnecting the batt didn't seem to reset my system ?
                        Cheers

                            Hi there,

I had a similar problem, "In the Middle of Nowhere", started OK, then a few minutes later nothing.

I had rolled the Prado forward on uneven ground & the wheels turned with the steering lock engaged.

This pulled the steering lock hard against the stop & the steering would not unlock when the start button was pressed.

Once I turned the steering wheel & held it off the steering lock stop, the engine started.

Happened to me yesterday when parking with full lock on front wheels. Came to move off and engine failed to start with all warning lights up. Toyota tech suggested few tips such as lock ,unlock, put remote closer to push start etc. No joy on this. When tow truck arrived and steering was unlocked to load she started without a problem. Toyota tech informed of similar problem with Camry! Getting this attended too as it's annoying and will make wife mad if it happens to her!
