  • H4 HID as a 120 Headlight replacement.

    Hi
Has anyone used this H4 HID kit to upgrade their 120 Headlights. (I will be using 4300k)
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/55W-H4-BI...item5ad87e861b

I know the 120's dont have seperate low and high beams like the 150, so it is HID for the low beams as well.
Any feedback on this HID kit or similar as a normal headlight please, it looks to make a big diference.
(not the legality about using them without self leveling lights/ washers etc, plenty of other threads cover that)
    Cheers
    Robert

Just fitted the kit 3 days ago exept mine are the 6000k ones(same supplier).......so far they are really good........i took the time to align them and even got the missus out last night to drive toward me and then i did the same in her car......they are bright but not intrusive at all.

i thought i'd get a bit more distance to be honest, they are a very clean light to look at........only gripe really with the kit is that the fuse is not weatherproof which is an easy fix and the loom is a little short.....100mmm longer would have been perfect.
I've gone from Narva blue+90's to these.
The standard 55w halogens fitted were terrible.

I installed very similar kit a while back (6000k). They have a very clean light and light up the road very well. Just make sure you setup the lights properly but they have very good cutoff like as they need to have. Well worth it I reckon.

          Hi Robert

After seeing dueler120 rig build up -bought the 6000 kit from the same seller in oct12, loved the kit for the about 3 weeks (not much night driving though-so not used extensively ) until passenger side light did not work, doubled checked connections, few emails to and from seller, swapped ballast either side etc now both would not work - no night driving for a week. Went to auto electrician when installed AMTS hid spotties and they could not get to work either, reinstalled old globes and they worked straight away. Went back to seller and have not heard squat from him.......

Did find this old pp thread refer post #88 dated in 2009 so he been around for a while

          http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...allation/page9

Best of luck with yours - hope have a better experience than me

After Xmas going to get the Phillip x-tremevision globes I think

          Cheers

I wasnt expecting someone to have had fitted the exact same kit, so you info is most relevant. Thanks
Did you have any issues with fitting the rubber boots over the bulbs as per Raydes below?
What is the start up time to full brightness on these?
Lastly where did you fit the ballasts? Any pics

              Cheers

Will do Craig, Thats where I set up my spotties but not the best location with cars from the TV channels, people going up the mountain to make out and tight windy roads.
We should find a better control location and then we can take some pics of standard, the +100 Philips bulbs I have in now and the HID kit and post them up.
                Cheers

I didn't have trouble with the rubber boots although it is a bit of a squeeze getting the bulb back in but no real dramas,(the battery has to come out to fit the passenger side assy and bulb)start up is roughly no more than 2 seconds and no delay between high and low that i can tell,i mounted my ballasts at the most foward part of the inner guards.......screwed and used the sticky backing that came with them........they are very secure and as vibration resistant as you could make them.

I also found them as a link in one of the threads on here but can't remember which thread, also i paid $89.95 delivered for mine......look up Hilux/Prado on e-bay i'm sure you'll find them......or search his store.

So is it just one bulb that does the low beam, and the high beam?

I take it that the 4300k are a yellowish light, and that the 6000k are a white/blue light.

Are the HID lights 35 watts?

What do you guys really think is a good colour.
I have heard that the higher the kelvin rating, ie 6000k and above, then these lights are not very efficient.

I believe the common standards are
                      4,300k
                      5,000k
                      6,000k
                      8,000k
                      10,000k
                      12,000k

Has any one fitted the 5,000k

I have fitted a similar kit about 2 months ago, overall am happy with them but did expect a bit better light on high beam. Low beam is great but there are shadows on high beam, no doubt due to the way the bulb moves in and shines through the slot in the carrier.

Yes, the same bulb does high and low. Moves in and out via a solenoid in the bulb carrier.

Would sure make installation a heap easier if the manufacturers were a little more generous with the wiring loom, i had to add 150mm to get wiring from one side to the other. I used the 6000k and the colour of the light is much better than halogen.

I installed the 5000K 35 watt kit from http://www.delonixradar.com.au/hid-x...inder/?id=2837 18 months ago. It's been excellent. Considerably more pricey than those you're looking at on eBay, but I'd heard about reliability problems with the cheaper ones and decided to give them a miss.

Delonix service is great and they stand by their product.

The headlight boots were a tight fit but we got there in the end.

Loom length was more than adequate and came with a few spare extensions which weren't needed.

You also get two super bright parking light bulbs as a freebie. (Straight swap, no wiring changes.)

The H4 bulbs have a solenoid in the base that moves the hot spot forward and back for low and high beam.

                          Cheers

I like the blurb (I mean BS) on their page "a reliable HID kit designed specifically for cars with CANBUS electrical system". If anyone can tell me how a plug and play HID light system interacts with the vehicle's CANBUS I'd be all ears..

I'll go out on a limb here and have a guess...
Since CANBUS monitors current, the vehicle BCM would be expecting the current draw of 2x 60watt (120watt) halogen high beam bulbs (10 amps). Once you replace these bulbs with 2 x 35watt (70watt) HIDs (5.8amps) the BCM see only half of the current it should see and assumes maybe that one of the bulbs has blown and would then give a warning via a dash light / LCD display or similar? Like I said, I'm no expert but this makes sense to me considering the exact same problem happens when upgrading factory incandescent indicator bulbs to LEDs and also adding extra trailer lights to vehicles like Ford Rangers without having the dealer reprogram the BCM to tell it there are different/additional bulbs.
                              There's my 2cents depositied....
