  • Bi-directional Isolators

    Hi,
I am looking to add a solar panel to my setup while camping. I already have a a dual battery setup with an old surepower isolator( not one of the recalled ones) . Running off the auxilary battery i have an anderson plug in the rear where I will hook the solar panel into.
Correct me if I am wrong but with the standard isolator I have if I hook the solar panel up to the anderson hooked to the Aux battery, it will only charge my Aux battery as the start battery is isolated from the auxilary via the Surepower. I would then have to connect it up to the start battery to charge that after charging the aux battery.
I presume with a bi directoional isolator the panel charges my auxilary then once charged, the bi directional isolator opens and then charges my start battery ?

I am trying to decide between the redarc
    http://www.redarc.com.au/products/pr...-sbi-12v-100a/

and ABR unit. ( this seems considerbaly cheaper and has a higher amperage)
    http://www.sidewinder.com.au/page80.html

I also intend to run the ABR dual battery monitor

Does anyone have this setup and can comment on it.

    Cheers
    Robert

    Hi Rob
I have installed a ABR dbi 140 isolator along with the ABR monitor which both are have worked ok but will offer a comment on the monitor, it is really hard to read unless you are facing it straight on with out any angle to the line of sight. The instructions did warn of this but like all good males i didn't read them until after fitting /drilling holes and cutting wires.
As for your solar question i can't help there.

      Russ,
Very glad you mentioned that about the ABR monitor. I was just about to purchase that isolator kit because it came with a battery monitor. May need to re-think.

The issue with the monitor is that when you choose where to place it you still can't check it untill you wire it up to get the LED to work and by then it can be to late .In saying that i usually only check it when the fridge is in the car running ,and we are camped so i can view the monitor by just stiicking the head in the car, but i can't read it when driving so it is just turned off. Mine is located under the ash tray area in front of the the switch blank panels ,but in hindsight i may of placed it beside the steer wheel, and may move it oneday. The isolator has been good, and the package price was good so i went that way, although i was only looking for the isolator and they [ABR sidewinder] are prompt in deliveries

          Thanks John,
To be frank, I can see the benefit of both directions ( isolator verses the BCDC path) , but what is even more intersting after speaking to a number of auto elecs they also seem to be divided on the isolator verses the BCDC paths as well.
There are plently of supporters of both options on the forum as well.

Thanks Rags, I liked the monitor in particular but thats good feedback about being hard to read. ( I would put it next to the steering wheel on the lower left dash.) I have now found a baintech twin voltage flush mount guage as well.
            Just thinking over my options.

Why do you need to charge your cranking battery. If you have an isolator then effectively you are using your aux battery when camping and the cranking battery is, well, isolated.
