  • Bio Diesel----Any good?

Does anyone use the cheaper bio diesel (eg: Gull bio diesel)?
Have heard it can damage the motor - some owners won't have a bar of it, while others use it on a regular basis!
I change both fuel filters regularly, as per the service book.

May not damage the motor but it there is a good chance it will damage your pump on the motor , they require fairly specific specifications for the fuel for lubrication/cooling/corrosion etc and for what a new pump will cost i wouldn't bother
Unless they will give you a written guarantee it wont!

It would be a braver man than me who uses Bio Diesel in any modern Common Rail Diesel Vehicle.

Use biodiesel in an old Masey Ferguson tractor by all means.... but NEVER in a diesel Prado...in fact, have a look at what Toyota say about it in the warranty book. Sounds lik a great idea, but unfortunately, quality, cetane rating and impurities can make it bad news for injectors and fuel pumps etc...its not just about having clean filters (althoug that will help) but also about the cetane rating blah blah blah...just don't take the chance with the Prado, seriously.

In the old 4.2 Patrols / Cruiser, etc engines (old technology) it wouldn't really be a problem, but I would not take a risk with any common rail diesels....its just too much of an unknown here in Australia..... what do they do in Europe, I remember reading somewhere that Bio-fuels are quite common over there.....

Read the 'extra' information booklet that came with your owner's manual. Pretty sure is states that you must not use biodiesel. How much are the injectors worth......no warranty........decision made.

Had no problems with bio when I had the Surf (1KDZ-TE 3L) over 250K.

Would I put it in the Prado.....no way for all the reasons above.

The Roo is right don't do it. Many years ago I looked into making it and it's not that difficult to do and would have been comfortable running it in the old Hi-Lux.

Common rails struggle with the poor quality diesel we have in this country let alone bio hence why they tune them down for Australia.

Having said that the manual says 5% from memory but also states it has to meet all the necessary specifications. Personally stay well away from it. Further purchase your fuel from a reliable garage. I purchase mine from the same garage now going over two years. If I ever get a bad batch I have all the receipts and compensation wouldn't be hard to get.

I picked up a bad batch of fuel about ten years ago from an independent garage. After taking a sample (jar was half full of gunk) and my receipts along with a quote from Toyota I got a cheque in the mail three months later.

Iv'e used it in my old school diesel in my MK Triton but only one tank. I found I got poorer economy and I couldn't stand the smell of burnt fish and chips from the exhaust. (Fush&Chups for our Kiwi bro's)
