  • Air compressor blows fuses for 12v sockets?!

    Hi all, couldn't find a thread relating to any of this so here it is. Please bear in mind that I have no electrical knowledge whatsoever. I bought a 12v air compressor from Bunnings the other week (I know, I know!). 60 odd bucks rated for 4WD tires pumps upto 150psi blah blah, I thought 'that will do the job!'. Tested it when I got home, dropped one tyre to 30psi then pumped it back upto 40psi, bit slow but no probs. Anyway took a couple of mates out for some sand dune fun ended up dropping everyones tyres to 10psi after a couple of us got bogged, good fun though. Got back to the main road to put some air in the tyres. It got through the first 2 ok but slow then I went to do a third and its cut out on me, I thought ah well dodgy fuse maybe. I plugged it into the 2nd 12v socket on the dash, cuts out after 5 mins. Didn't want to go for a third time lucky so we drove to the closest servo to air up the rest. But I had a look at the fuses box and it had fried 2 fuses. But my mate plugged it into his Navara to do his tyres and and he didn't blow a fuse. Mind you he only pumped to 20psi because he saw what happened to my fuses. The compressor was running really hot and and was really slow. I'm puzzled. can anyone help??:!::?: I did get my money back for the compressor though haha!

    Those cigarette lighter sockets are rated around the 10 amp mark from memory, I doubt that is nearly enough for any compressor. My ARB compressor is fused at 30amps.

    As far as it being slow and hot, all compressors will get hot, slow reflects the quality and price you paid. I have nothing against bunnings, in fact I am a shareholder so would encourage people to deposit money there, but maybe not the first place I would look for a compressor.

    As you found out, failure of equipment meant you were unable to inflate a tyre, not an issue if you are close to a servo but a major problem if you are a long way from anywhere and need to pump up tyres.

      I would have preferred one with clamps to go straight onto the battery terminals but the socket compressors were all they had. Lesson learnt haha cheers

        I bought one of these a while back Doug - https://www.malz.com.au/products/DPSH0118 - however I have recently swapped to an ARB under bonnet compressor.

        My old one does the job (i.e. will pump up all four tyres without cutting out), has alligator clips to connect straight to your battery and comes in a carry case, its just a bit slow. $50 and its yours, just send me a PM.

            You get what you pay for when it comes to compressors. I got one of those other brand name pumps included with a magazine subscription and it fries fuzes all the time and has been repaired once. I have 2 ARB compressors. The original was purchased back in 1998 when I moved to Albany and has seen a fair bit of use. It still works but is slow compared to my new ARB compressor with auto pressure cut out and switch. It may have cost $350 but so did the first one back in '98. This new one will pump up 6 tyres from 16psi in no time at all.

              Doug,

              When I got started, bought Projecta 150 PSI 72 LPM 30A, came with aligator clips, think it was about $140. Has done a good job inflating 4 tyres from 18PSI to 40PSI no dramas at all, just needed a few minutes to cool down before putting back into blow moulded case. Upgraded to ARB CKMA12 onboard comp just so it was under the bonnet, out of the way and no bulky storage case that I have to wait for comp to cool down. Super fast, I inflated my 4 tyres from 18-40PSI & my 2 of my mates 80 series, whilst he used Portable Bushranger's comp to do the other 2 tyres. Spent ~ $350 for ARB Comp incl. Air hose & tyre inflator, installed myself. With the comp being under the bonnet, no case to drag out and less inflation time and pack away time, well worth the extra $'s. Couldn't convince the "Handbrake" originally, but hey now I have a backup comp just in case. Budget = cheap & bulky (blow some fuses), Mid Range = less space with better performance. High range = space negotiable with awesome performance and price tag to go with it. This is the joy of 4wding and budgeting, go every weekend & hardcore spend some $$$, go now & again, budget to suit your means but enough to get you out of trouble ;-) Happy to add some confussion to the discussion. ;-)
