  • How to change suspension?

Hey guys i was wondering if i buy a 45mm Suspension kit from ironman 4x4, would it be hard to change it myself ? or would i have to take my 4wd into a shop to do it? and how much would it cost to take it into a shop?

Suspension upgrades can be done in the garage with the right tools and a little bit of mechanical know how. However, if you're not familiar with mechanics then it might be best to get a professional to do the job for you.

There are a few things that need to be considered before jumping in for a suspension upgrade, such as the type of standard setup on the prado (airbags or not?)

There are plenty of threads regarding suspension and a number of the guys have done their own and provided the forum with a DIY write up... If you use the search, or a google search, you will likely find a few of these.

Your going to run into problems with the front springs, the load on them is extremely high, thus extremely dangerous to undo them without the correct gear, a cheap ass spring compressor will not handle the load, you need specalized tools, and by the time you have bought them, it would be cheaper to get a specalist suspension guy to do it for you.

I did mine using some borrowed spring compressors. You could always just get a workshop to assemble the struts for you, the rest is easy. Don't forget a wheel alignment afterwards.

I'm inclined to agree with Peter, the back is pretty straight forward. But you will need to borrow compressors for the front, or get a workshop to assemble the front strut for you.

The rear can also be a pain, as the upper shock nut is terribly difficult to get to.

I'd say just pay someone to do it, unless you plan to rework (customise) the suspension again later down the track.
