  • KYB Shocks = Bad!, Oztec Shocks

Had the oppurtunity to drive a family friends 90 series last week with OME HD springs and Nitrocharger Sport shocks fitted. I was shocked. I have Lovell's Medium springs and KYB shocks installed and its like riding a billy cart compared to their Prado.

Climbing under my prado, I found a leaking L/H rear shock. Rocked the car and it was like a see-saw. The shocks are 18 mths old and 28 000 km with very little hard work at all. I took it in to the installer and had him go for a drive in it. After putting it up on the hoist and having a look he agreed and said that the rear shocks are knackered and he'd 'never seen KYB wear out so quickly'. Apparently the front struts are fine. I looked up the model numbers and found that the KYB Excel G is defiantly not a HD 4x4 shock, and whilst I was on a budget at the time I defiantly asked for a shock that would last. KYB make a 4x4 shock called a Skorched4 or some BS name which should have been installed.

So the first thing I should say is to never buy KYB Excel G shocks for your Prado! To the retailer's credit they are being replaced on Thursday morning with a free wheel balance to fix up Bob Jane's sheer brilliance in this regard. Now, this is where it gets funny.

The retailer proposed 'Oztec' long travel shocks with a 'limited lifetime warranty'. I said I want Koni. He said "I want you to try them", like I'm some sort of guinea pig. Has anyone even heard of oztec? Their website seems a bit dodgy. http://www.oztecsuspension.com.au. Why should I put another below standard set of shock absorbers on the car?

He then said he'd put them on "and if I don't like them we can go to Koni". I'm sure this guys been in the business for a long time but I know shocks aren't like trying on shoes. I even offered to pay the difference between the original KYB and the Konis, which judging by his prices would be significant. I know if I had my money again I would have an all-round OME setup. That way I would know it was built for the purpose.

Apologies for the long winded post, just a frustrating day. Especially seeing as the KYB were 200 a corner and lasted 18 months and 28 000km.

G'day mate. Sorry to hear you had a bad experience with the KYBs. Those excels are definitely not real 4x4 shocks but don't be put off KYB altogether. I've had their Scorched 4 shocks and struts on for a while now and they are performing well - and they get a hammering. I reckon they're good value.
    Cheers, Ben.

      Hey Ben

Yeah read a lot of good stuff about the Skorched4. Might try and get those as replacements if the Konis don't work out. I really don't want these Oztec shocks, theres no info at all online apart from the Frontera forum.

        Hi Reidy.

-The KYB Excel G's are definitely aimed at being more of an OE replacement than an offroading shock.
If used for your ma & pa car around the burbs, they are great.
-The Scorched4's are the offroad version & are pretty good value for money as Torrie72 said.
-The Oztec i can't comment on, as i have not had any experience with them nor heard of them before.
-The Koni's are Brilliant, (but at a price). Question: How far is your car Lifted?
If lifted, you can only go with the Koni 88 Series on the Front (which is the at a price bit) & you can run the 82 Series on the rear. Koni do not recommend at all to run the 82 Series on the front for lifted applications. The Prado's are well known for giving the lower front bushes a hard time & especially in a raised application. The 88 Series is much much beefier in construction than the 82 Series to cope with this raise........ Why do i know all this about the Koni?? .....I did all the research on them for my own car & wanted them but the Budget wouldn't stretch to them for me.

        Hope this helps a little.

          Hey Jason

They suspension place said that the front struts were fine and in good condition, however I'm not going to stand for it. I asked for heavy duty suspension when I got the Lovells Springs and KYB shocks fitted and I got rubbish. I'm going in there tomorrow morning and I am going to ask for heavy duty, well known and supported shocks on all 4 corners that will not disintegrate when I start getting serious in a few years. The product supplied was not fit for the purpose (well half of it anyway) If Canberra roads can do this to a shock, then christ knows what the tracks in the NT will do.

As a side note, I'm a bit pissed that the car doesn't sit level, the front is significantly lower than the rear. Hopefully he'll come up with a solution. Do the Konis have the circlip arrangement on the front struts to adjust the ride height slightly?

So I went in this morning armed and ready for a battle. The owner wasn't in so that was a bit of an anti-climax. However, I left a statement with the guy in the office bellow with what I wanted:

              Problems with the vehicle

              - Passenger car shocks fitted- KYB Excel-G. Asked for heavy duty 4x4 shocks to cope with the extra weight and off-road driving that the car is used for. Rear shocks are U/S at 28 000 km. Front claimed to be serviceable. Car is rough and unpredictable onroad. When questioned about the nature of the shocks fitted at the 5 000 km front end check, the response was “these are the P/N for the Prado” not whether or not they were suited for the job.

              - Standard duty springs fitted to the front Lovells TFR-72 - Asked for heavy duty springs in the front to cope with weight of bulbar, winch and duel batteries. The heavy duty P/N for the front springs is TFR-72HD. Insisted that it was fit for the purpose after I questioned the front of the vehicle sitting lower than the rear.

              Proposed solution

-Replacement of all shock absorbers with equipment that is fit for the purpose. Koni, BIlstein, Lovells Legend or KYB Scorched4 or a combination of the above to suit the off-road nature of the vehicle.

-Replacement of front springs with TFR-72HD to alleviate the front end droop caused by incorrect spring rate.

              - Protection of rear shocks with stone guards to prevent damage

Oztec are not considered because they have no reputation in the market place.

              Cost

I am willing to pay cost price for the replacement front springs and a contribution to the replacement of the shocks. I base this request based on the original equipment not being fit for the purpose, consequently failing prematurely and not being as requested.

              Outcome

I got a phone call half an hour ago saying that the front springs would be swapped for heavy duty units and 4x Koni's would be installed. How much, "I'd rather look after you seeing as we fitted the wrong product". Excellent outcome, looks like I own't be paying much at all. I'll report on the new set up tomorrow evening when I should get her back.
