  • 2004 Prado Aircon issues. Compressor intermittently turning off

    Hi ALL

Not sure if this is an electrical issue however I suspect it is. The aircon compresor is intermittently turning itself off, via the clutch on the compressor. The light on the interior button is lit however I can tell that its turned itself off...

I've had the bonnet up under the carport and noted on the odd occasion I press the button I dont hear the compressor clutch engage. I'm suspecting a relay but as usual, the fusebox on the LHS wheel arch is pretty cryptic. Yes there are relays in there but which one is it ? :-)

Is it a relay I can get at an auto electrician or do I need to take out a home loan and go to Toyota ? I've re-seated teh relays but no change...

    Any info would be appreciated..Pete

Sandman, I had the same issue with mine 18mths ago. It was the relay located in the main fuse box L/Hside engine bay, replaced with non genuine relay, been good ever since.
a couple of old posts, there was a another helpful one with relay part nos but can't find now

Could be lack of gas/refridgerent. Another way of checking to see if its a gas problem (after trying relay if that doesnt work) is disconnect the high and low pressure switch and join the two terminals and see if the compressor cuts in then. If it does then its low on gas and the high and low pressure switch is doing its job to protect the compressor from been damaged by running dry (the refridgerent has oil in it to keep system and seals lubricated) DONOT run the aircon with the wire joining the two terminals you will stuff the compressor as I have described. How long since its been gassed ??? Has vehicle been in accident ??? leaking seal possibly.....Hope this helps you out.......Cheers Steve

Also forgot, if too much gas it will also cut out, or cycle on and off extremely quickly and worse when its a hot day, again this is the high and low switch doing its job to stop any seals been blown.......

Steve n Russ, thanks for all the good feedback. The car has never been pranged and the aircon never touched, well that I know of anyway. I've booked it in with a local aircon mob to suss it out as it could be a pressure issue but then again hard to say. I'm going to kick myself if its a relay but with summer coming on thick and fast out here in Alice Springs, an intermitt aircon is NOT what you want :-)

Russ thanks on the ebay details for the relay, it would take 3 weeks to get to me out here and I've got friends coming from Syd and we're heading to Uluru and its going to be a stinker so its a risk...

If the guy tries to stick me $100 for a relay then at least I now know you can get them a hell of a lot cheaper :-)

Pete, I wasn't promoting the ebay link ,more showing a sample of threads with A/C issues similar to yours and mine. I payed no more than $30 for the relay from the auto elect who also serviced my A/C system. I also regassed the system, which ended up causing more problems as they over gassed it, with once the excess gas was removed ,and relay replaced no more issues.
Ps don't forget to pay the carbon tax on the A/C gas to keep Julia happy.
Good luck as i sure you need the air out in the Alice

Well I have just discovered my air con not working, when I know it worked when I got the car. Had a quick look under the bonnet and it seems when TJM put the steel bull bar on, they have pushed it up to the steel pipe in front of the radiator, with the vibration of the bar it has worn through and let out all the gas.
Now I will have to call TJM and see if they will take responsibility.
            Cheers, Josh
