  • New tweaked LR disco4 diesel for 2013

Yes I know it's not a LR site (probably would have crashed or frozen up if it was lol) but just reading tonight the 2013 model will sport a 3.0 TT V6 diesel with 180kw and 600nm and a 8 speed auto. Surely Toyota can tantalize me with something even close in the 2013 Prado?

No doubt just about every other country will get an improved motor except Australia:-(

Personally, I'm thinking Toyota will leave the engine until the 180 model, but fingers crossed it comes earlier.

A nice TT V6 diesel would fit nicely in the engine bay, considering there's not a lot of difference in width to the 200series, with it's TT V8!

Im not Bogged - I've just lost traction. . . . . and now I'm showing the wife why I bought those Maxtrax, and the tyre deflator, and the compressor, and the bullbar, and the winch, and a lot of other goodies I've hidden in the Prado

The problem with the 3.0 Rover is that becaue the brakes are so big 19" wheels are the minimum and off road tyres are nil.

I agree. You almost need to go 20's and get a set of cooper zeon s but that's still not ideal.

That is certainly a problem, but I wouldn't call it the problem with LR lol

            haha....bit true.

Although Im not sure if LR are actually that bad or its just a bad reputation that has stuck but the newer cars are good??? not sure. Bit like Hyundai we bag them but for the last 10 years they're actually great cars.

Series I were scary bad, II a bit better and III pretty good but (and it is a BIG but) when you get a problem it is usually of Biblical proportion like the dreaded suspension collapse. The series IV are better again though if you visit their forum you find more than a few posts saying things like mine did such and such today, anyone know why or how to fix it? And the replies are usually NUH, never heard of it, you're on your own etc. Oh and I forgot the downhill assist that likes to go on strike for better conditions, usually in the middle of a steep descent! A mate with a III has wired a bypass electrical supply to the air suspension to overcome the dreaded arse drag, sorry suspension collapse and a few of the electronic aids have bypasses too. I like 'em though and a III was an option when I bought the 120 and only supply ruled it out in the end and a IV will be on the short list in a year or two.

So buy a 2013 series 4 keep it during the factory warranty period then unload it (probably for a fraction of what you paid) Unfortunately.

                  Daz,

It's not only Land Rover that's miles ahead in Diesel Technology, check the table attached. I included the LC 200 as it is only marginally more powerful than some of the 3 litre engines.

It's a real pity Toyota can't manage to supply something similar, even a decent auto would be a start.

I've test driven all these cars in the last month, in this company the Toyota's stand out as rough (vibration), noisy and (Prado) gutless. My Prado is chipped and has a turbo back aftermarket exhaust, together these have improved torque and smoothness, but, it's still rough, noisy and has poor highway overtaking ability.

Some of these euro engines have been around for 5 or 6 years, reliability from an overall engine perspective has not been an issue, of course there will be the odd incident, but overall fine. These engines are not just fitted to low volume 4WD's and SUV's, they are fitted to luxury sedans as well.

                  Imagine a 3 lt D4D in a Lexus!

Toyota can certainly build petrol engines and the 4 litre Prado engine is a great example. Hopefully they will get up to speed with the Diesel's soon.

Yes pretty ordinary compared to the rest of the list. I hear what your saying as well a Nate of mine has a new XF Jaguar with the 3.0v6 LR/RR motor and he loves it. Lexus wouldn't sell so well with a Toyota diesel. The odd diesel problem some of the more prestige s makes have is still no worse than the problems Toyota have anyway so you still can't use the old yeah but mines a bullet proof Toyota chestnut. I just hope Toyota has a cracker of a diesel nearly ready to go because its getting embarrassing and I would buy the diesel next time. I couldn't buy the D4D this time round because I drove the 3.0 LR4 the day before then D4D it was an eye opener.

Toyota would need to introduce a new engine without injector issues and up the power and torque by about 50% over the D4D to get me to look at a diesel. I don't tow so range is the single redeeming feature of the D4D for me and that's not enough to convince me at this point in time.

Have been "tossing" the update idea around for a couple of years or more, but going to stick with the 2003 slug with a chip, as it has done all asked of it without complaining, ever.!!
Towed a 22ft Jayco Heritage all over and around Australia (and Tassie ) and has 190000 klms up so far.
Body as new condition, so recon it would still be a better idea to spend the $40,000+ on replacing motor etc when and if needed, than spening it on upgrading to a new one with problems.
Wife has had a new Honda and Suzuki in the last 4 years and the Prado is far more comfortable than both of them.

Did I say I was madly in love with the slug ?
