Subject: FEEDBACK- Power chip for 150 series Prado- Bob Rowland
Hi Cameron, seems an age since I collected the Prado after you fitted the diesel chip and new exhaust.
We just had our first real long distance towing exercise with the caravan since it was fitted and pleased to report that it went very well. I used setting number 2 for the 4 day long weekend which took us to Bridgetown/Pemberton via Collie with a few real hills in the mix. I have also been following advice not to tow in overdrive (5th gear in the auto) and basically drive the Prado with the paddle shift when towing. We generally tow at a max of 90km/hr in 4th gear. We are towing a van with a mass of 2.2tonnes. We averaged 14.5l/100km over about 1000 km which is better than the 15.5-16 we were getting last year when we went to Albany Esperance in December. (I have also had a snorkel fitted to the air intake on the Prado and I am sure this is helping as well.) I think we could confidently say the mods have achieved a 6-7% improvement in fuel economy. I also noticed the increase in available power but don’t have a measure for it?
A question. When you made the changes to the Prado did you put the car onto the Dyno and produce the new power and torque curves? I would be interested to see where the peak torque is. Do you know what the increase is for the different settings on the chip and where it occurs for the various revs
We are heading away again in a month and I will try setting number 3 for this trip. These are “testing” trips in advance of our 9-12 months on the road starting in Feb after I retire.
