  • Water Watch System

So I have just taken delivery of a new 150 D4d prado and am thinking of fitting the "water watch" system in the fuel line from Cooma Diesel. Just wondering if anyone has one fitted, if so, any comments???

yep, we have them on our entire fleet, Give Dave a call at Cooma diesel... he loves a chat, they work fantastic.

I asked about a similar system and I was told not to bother due to the built in system being so good.

I would like to fit a Water watch system to my new 150 D4d update (4th Sept 2013 build)
It appears with the new update Toyota has put a 'Relay' box in the spot on the firewall which takes up part of the space where a Water watch/extra filter usually goes next to the fuel filter. The Prado bracket supplied by Water watch will not suit if this is the case. I have raised my concern with them and they are currently looking into it.

Particularly seeking feedback from anyone with a new update model (built after 26th Aug. 2013) who has fitted one- and where?

Also looking for any current feedback on how the Water watch has performed, quality , etc.

        Thanks in anticipation.
        David

          Hi Bluedog16,
I found it a simple matter to relocate the relay box from the firewall to the inner guard using an existing hole in the guard and drilling a second one.

            Hi Harro,
            Thanks for you're reply.
I wasn't sure if the wires to the relay box had enough free play to move it anywhere.
If you then fitted a Water watch:-
            1. Did you fit it where the relay box was on the firewall using the bolts the relay was on, or on the guard next to the fuel
filter using Water watches Prado bracket?
            2. Are you happy with the water watch system?
            3. If you have any pictures of your instal I would be very interested to see them.

            thanks
            David.

What is the difference between water watch and fuel manager?

I have the Water Watch on my 150 but had to modify the mounting bracket to fit . It goes on ok after the mod but I did have problems trying to prime the fuel up using the original primer hand pump . I did the job at my mate's place and he's a mechanic so he pushed the fuel through by putting an air line into the fuel tank filler with a rag wrapped around to seal it off . The fuel then came through into the WWatch bowl then on into the OEM filter no worries .I did notice that the WWatch alarm came on after I'd washed the engine down but cleared after the engine had dried off .
                Cheers Ross

A water watcher doesn't have much particle filtration capacity however they can usually handle a higher fuel flow for a given size and the elements inside generally don't need changing. The only ongoing maintenance is draining the water bowl.

The CAT or Racor style setups are a water separator and filter combined.

Water watcher units generally come with a water in fuel sensor which can be wired up to an alarm or light in the cabin. The water sensors are also available for CAT and Racor units.

                    Hi Bluedog',
I fitted a "Fuel Manager" 30 micron filter which also has a water seperator bowl. This unit was previously fitted to my 120 Prado which i traded. it mounts on the side wall next to the standard filter in pre existing holes. A very easy job. today i had my first complementary service on the prado 150 and i asked them what the relay box was for in the more upmarket models (mine is a GX). The reply in writing was that "the box was for European models for a de-icer which is not required in Australian models". Further "that there is no issue if this box is removed as long as the wires coming from the lower section on the box are not left hanging loose in the engine bay". Hope this helps.

                      Hi Harro,
Thank you for the trouble you went to in asking about the Relay box. That is good news as it means that 150 Upgrade owners can still fit an additional filter in the usual spot next to the Toyota fuel filter using existing available brackets if they wish too. Hopefully removing the relay box is an easy cheap job.
                      thanks again

                        Hi all,
Would love some advice from 150/150 update owners with a Waterwatch fitted please or anyone with knowledge/advice.

I have been considering an additional fuel filter for quite a while as I think it is very wise thing to do, but haven't been able to commit in the past till Waterwatch addressed the 150 update model issues for its product.

I have decided on the Waterwatch system as I think water is my main enemy, but I am not convinced that the model that is recommend (WW20072) fits, and can be easily operated on the 150 Update model.

Responsive Engineering have now addressed the 150 Update model and their response has been to:-
                        1. Made an additional bracket to relocate the Relay box to allow fitting the Waterwatch, same as before in the 150-next to the
                        Toyota filter and to,
                        2. Still recommend the fitting of the larger model (WW20072).

The smaller model (WW40072) I think is a better fit, has the same flow rate, but the smaller bowl will give a shorter warning/reaction time? (however, is it still plenty of time if the alarm goes off)?

I would prefer to fit the larger model recommended simply due to the larger reaction time I would have (as it has a larger bowl) but need some advice if it is REALLY feasible space wise.

                        Questions
                        1. Does the larger WW20072 actually fit in the space properly and can it be operated easily ? (can you get your hands in
underneath to release any water in the bowl)
                        2. With the Waterwatch fitted does it crowd the Toyota filter ? - can the Toyota filter be easily serviced and the filter changed with
the Waterwatch next to it? Are Toyota going to be happy?
                        3. Would I be better to fit the smaller model?(WW40072) -it is the same cost
                        4. Would I be better to fit say a Racor 230R10? -(reason not my 1st choice as doesn't tell me when I am driving I have a problem
although advantage of an additional filter)

Would really like to hear your thoughts and correct my thinking if needed so I can stop procrastinating.
                        thanks
                        David

                          David,

The Toyota filter already has a water detector built in, granted it is a smaller capacity
than the water watch but if you don't kill the motor as soon as the light comes on
with either your going to be in the poo.

I was also not convinced that the water watch would detect highly atomised water
in the fuel, and if a large quantity of water there is still the possibility of water
traveling through the system before you can pull over.

I decided to fit the Racor as it provided more protection, ie it blocks the water from
passing through the filter, it can also be fitted with a water detection alarm, yes doubling
up again but the filter in this case blocks the water and hopefully assuming only a small
contamination will give you time to pull over safely. The alarm is also quite loud and not
                          likely to be overlooked.

Toyota don't seem to have an issue fitting an extra filter as long as it is before the factory
                          unit.

                          Cheers

                            David,

I have a facelift 150 and have decided to fit a racor 230R10 with the AMTS combo bracket. This allows me to also fit an ARB compressor in this area. I ordered the filter on eBay for the US which worked out alot cheaper than getting it locally. As for the extra relay box, i just removed it from the bracket, removed the bracket from the firewall and placed it in the spare parts box. The relay box i zip tied up to the main loom against the firewall. All fits nicely.

If you check out AMTS's for sale thread in the market place there are photos of it posted there, sorry, im not smart enough to post the link, hopefully someone else is.

Once you have the filter and the bracket all you need is two right angle barb fittings and about 30cm of 3/8 fuel hose and clamps to suit.

                              Hi Leigh & AussieAndy,
Thank you both for your replies.
The Racor does have the advantage of extra filtration.
                              A few questions:-
                              1. Westen Filters in NSW has them at $250. How does it compare to your price Aussie Andy?
                              2. What size right angle fittings do you need ? (Western filters ask if 5/16, or 3/8 ?)
                              3. Is it easy to change a new filter myself?
                              4. Leigh did you fit yourself or can you recommend anyone? I live South East of Melbourne in Frankston. Doesn't seem to be any Diesel mechanics around here that
                              I am aware of.

                              Thank you both
