  • New battery from Toyota made in Australia

Along with my engine rebuild the dealer fitted a new main battery after telling me my old one had leaked some acid. The new one is a N70ZZL by Smartdrive, has a Toyota label and identified as Toyota aftermarket, is made in Australia, and claims to save up to 2% in fuel savings. I'm just amazed that it's made in Australia - land of the clever people.

I guess by being lighter and having a lower AH rating which would charge quicker?

Just googled it.... Made by Century/Yuasa.
Seems to me it's just another battery.
Maybe the Toyota / Smartdrive sticker has some benefits?
I am feeling a little cynical tonight....

2% fuel savings is just a little on the hard side to believe Presumably this is over standard, so if its a Toyota battery then why not put them in from new and give us the supposed fuel saving from the start.

Changing the battery can't make you use less power, so the same amount of power needs to be generated by the Alternator, so the only way I can think that the battery can make a fuel saving is if its lighter, but 2% I don't think so.

          Cheers Andrew

got a pretty new (~4 months old) century battery in mine... has a sticker that makes the same claim... i believe the caveat is if you have a "smart" charging system... like one that can either clutch out the alternator once the battery is fully charged, or completely unload it... hence reducing the load on the engine... i don't know, any benefit would have to be minute... even a 2% claim seems a bit high to me.

Well, I managed to save 9 weeks of fuel expenditure thanks to Toyota's duff injectors blowing my engine. That's how long it took to fix.

Once a battery is charged it does not draw noticable load from the system... When a car is running the alternator powers the system, 13.6-14.2Vdc, not the battery, 12.8Vdc - the battery only acts as a load (until charged)... The alternator naturally loads and unloads as per the demand of the cars electrical system...

2% saving in fuel - load of BS, IMO.

                  Could also be:

1/ Lower internal loses when fully charged.

2/ A full calcium battery which will never fully thus lower internal loses

3/ Slower charging rate (possibly as per note2), and less current surge after starting.

/ Sales hype as how can you measure it to prove otherwise but then maybe I'm just
                  being cynical.
