  • Sound quality of aftermarket stereo

    Hi fellas,

I've got an 03 GXL with the old factory 6stack cd/tape player. I'm very happy with the sound quality it produces but need to upgrade as the Cd player has packed up.

I'm chasing a stereo which has a usb and aux plug, fm/am radio and Cd (6stack preferred but not real fussed). I don't want to run an amp and i don't want any fancy dvd players and definitely don't want a touch screen.

I have been keeping my eye out for a factory toyota stereo with all this but even second hand ones are too expensive so my only option is an aftermarket one.

My biggest worry with an aftermarket stereo is the sound quality with the factory speakers.

Has anyone installed an aftermarket stereo and kept the factory speakers or have any advice on the matter?
Does anyone know where i can get a factory stereo with all this for less than $300?

    Cheers

I've got a factory unit in my shed out of a '06 GX Prado. But it doesn't have a USB or Aux input.

Dont forget if keeping an eye on ebay that most toyota units will fit, eg hilux, kluger, yaris, hiace van and the later ones have the USB. Personally I dont think you really need to worry about a stacker as this is the idea of the USB. Yes you may pay up to (from what i have seen) $400 but worth it I think to just pull yours out and whack in another genuine unit, no splicing cables modifying brackets etc and everything is just plug and play. Most of the cheaper after market units I personally dont think will be as good unless your spending more then $300. So unles you know how to wire an aftermarket unit up, which can some times be tricky when dealing with fader front to back plus the tweeter speakers up on top of the dash you may be paying for some one to fit it for you so your cost have gone up anyway. Some thing to think of anyway...........Cheers Steve

Yeah me to Roo I love the Alpine stuff, wife always had Pioneer in most of her cars. These days the factory head units in the toyota's suits me fine, loud enough, clear, unless of course you need rear view camera etc if its not standard or VMS unit etc. Im not sure why people pay huge $$$ for an in dash GPS that needs updating anyway every now and then and the only way that I know of is you have to buy it from Toyota ?? Stuff that my $200 Tomtom does the same job. I have seen dash's ripped out and destroyed by low life scum who want the GPS units for them selves. They should install tracking on these units so when they do get flogged you can track the low lifes down so you can give them a flogging then jam it up there a### so they can find there way back to the gutter............Cheers Steve

You should be able to pick up an Alpine CDE-W235EBT for under $300 - has mp3, usb, single cd and bluetooth. Ipod is via usb.
I have installed the above unit with a few extras added to it and the sound is just fantastic - my set up cost approx $1300, but that included, the deck, adapter cable, new speakers, small amp, steering wheel interface (didn't want to loose the steering wheel controls), sound deadening in doors, custom panels for the speakers and labour to put it all in.
I could have replaced the head unit only but my speakers were stuffed (don't know what the previous owner did to them) so I needed to spend a bit more.
In my Rav4 I have just a single din Alpine connected to the factory speakers and it works very well.

              Cheers all,

I've been checking ebay and have saw a few but wasn't sure if stereos from standard model hiluxs and hiaces would be able to deal with the tweeters and stuff in the GXL, does anyone know if they can?

Yeah mate I would say they all have setting for it. The same as you have now you push the left control knob and you keep flicking it it comes up van, sedan, etc..........In saying that I have seen that on the hilux radios not sure on the hiace's but I willl see if my neighbours home he has a new hiace........Cheers Steve

I paid about $300 for my genuine Toyota Stereo from a 2011 Hilux from a wrecker, it has an aux plug, USB, 6 stacker and bluetooth. The Prado has the same plugs etc, all you have to do is plug it in and turn it on.

Hey Justo what was the model number on that unit.

From memory I read somewhere that you can buy a Toyota rear camera for that unit and the 120 GXL has the wiring already at the rear to just plug it in.

I don't know the model number sorry, I beleive there is a thread on here that has the model number in it somewhere. One thing to watch is that you get one that has the green backlights, you can change the colour of the display but not the lights on the buttons etc.
From what I have read, some of the later model 120's do have the camera wires in them, I think it might be 08 onwards but mine is an 05 so I would imagine it wouldn't have them there.
