  • Lower ball joints

My truck was in today for a major service and check with rego due in a week. I was told that both lower ball joints had considerable movement in them and should be replaced before passing rego check. Genuine Toyota are around $700 for the pair, with a similar price from Repco. Now I have seen plenty of different ones on eBay that I can get delivered for under $150/pair. They even come with 2yr/40,000km warranty. Is it worth the risk of getting ones that are sooo much cheaper, considering they are an important part of the suspension. Has anyone here had experience with any particular supplier on eBay for these parts. If they give 2yr warranty, they must be OK, right ?.
I just can't get over how expensive they are EOM.
I really need to do something this week before the rego due date passes.

Don't forget NRMA discount on Repco parts, and if you're a regular customer they can even make a better price for you.

I don't buy anything from ebay, and I definitely wouldn't risk having cheap ball joints...

These next two are lucky that no panel damage occured!!

If I remember correctly ball joints were the subject of a recall some years ago, has yours got the sticker showing they were replaced? Probably no joy from Toyota if it wasn't but cannot hurt to ask the question.

Mine has had the recall work performed in the past. I believe they fitted collars to protect the ball joints.
I had the vehicle checked by a second mechanic who pointed out the tie rod ends and steering rack ends have also sustained wear due to the movement in the ball joints, which I could see myself. I received a quote for the replacement of lower ball joints, tie-rod ends and rack ends, all Terrain Tamer, for $500 for parts and roughly another $500 to fit. I know Terrain Tamer buy basically Chinese product, but they have a reputation to protect, so I'm happy to use their parts.
