  • Surging at low speed - any ideas

    Hi,

I have a Diesel GX 150 Auto 2011 and have noticed that it surges under very light acceleration. Typically it happens between 3rd and 4th under very smooth acceleration and if I put the foot down a bit harder the surging stops. I can't reproduce this all the time but my partner has managed to get it to happen a few times so it isn't just me. It is very similar to the hesitation problem people reported about going through a roundabout - I had that issue too and it was resolved with a software update.

Has anyone else experienced this issue? It is difficult to explain it properly but that is about the best I can do. Any pointers or suggestions welcome.

I reported it to the Toyota service department at the 30000 service and they mentioned to contact them if it happened again. I have it booked it this week (32500k) to try to get it to happen with the mechanic in the car. Hopefully I can reproduce it.

Yeh, I have a similar issue. Thought it might have been some dodgy fuel but after two full tanks it it still happening intermittently. I haven't had time to get it back to Toyota yet, but would be keen to know how you get on.

        Hi Sean, Si & Rae,

At least I am not alone. I will be meeting with Toyota tomorrow and will let you know. Problem is I haven't experienced it for a week. I will see how it goes. At least I have informed them of the problem and I will persevere.

Interesting, no problem with the 2010 build. I wonder whether there is another firmware update running on the 2011 build?

I dropped into Toyota today and discussed the symptoms with the head mechanic. Then I took him for a drive but couldn't reproduce the problem whilst he was in the truck

However, they have opened a report and will leave it open. If it occurs again, I have to take some details such as position of temp gauge, outside temp, fuel level, conditions outside, road condition (uphill, level, downhill, etc), speed, estimated gear, revs, etc (if I can get all that). And the process begins

It's not much but it is a start. And I congratulate them on customer service. They have listened, asked me to reproduce an intermittent problem, offered suggestions to narrow it down and kept the problem record open. Just hope I can get to the bottom of it.

Sounds very simillar to mine, although mines a 2012 manual. The car first started doing it at 10,000k's and still does it from time to time and it now has 26,000ks. Berwick Toyota have also felt it on 2 seperate occasions but couldn't replicate it with the scantool plugged in. They have stated they would like the car for a couple of days to get it to do it with the scantool plugged in to get a snap shot of what the computer is doing but being a work vehicle, it's hard to find the time. Atleast Toyota have felt it and acknowledged that there is a problem.

I've had this sort of problem in my 2010 GX for a little while.
Only ever seems to happen at the first tee intersection about 3kms after I leave home in the morning or at the next one 6kms on.
I'll coast to the intersection and stop for any cars but when I turn and start to accelerate I sometimes get a bit of a bunny hop between 2200-2400rpm like it's starving for fuel. It only ever does this first thing in the morning and only occasionally, never if I leave work at lunchtime or head home after work.
I've had it back to Toyota twice, last time I left it for a couple of days, but they couldn't find a fault with it.
They did a transmission software update again ( 1st one was shortly after I bought it to fix the overheating issue) but it still continued to do it.
I tend to drive in sport mode most of the time, except when on open road driving and I tend the think the problem is in the transmission, although the tacho needle has a little hissy fit and jumps about like the engine is hesitating.
Anyway Toyota have a log of the issue, hopefully a solution can be found if enough owners are experiencing this.

Dobbo, your problem sounds like the 2400rpm flat spot issue. A software update is available for that, the update number is:

TNS63/11 Hesitation on downshift under acceleration

                  It was issued on 26/08/11

There is also a long thread on the topic located here http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...0rpm+flat+spot

Well it happened again on Sunday when we were heading for the tracks. Stopped at a railway crossing waiting for a train to go through, once it passed, I took off, slightly uphill, 10 degrees, normal temp gauge (just under half), 7/8 full tank, about 2200-2300 rpm, around 40kph and time was 8:20am.

My partner noticed it heading home but I didn't - too many beers at the pub after all the fun

I thought this as well but I had this software update done about a month ago and it has made no difference to the surging. It has fixed the flat spot issue but the surging occurring prior to the update as well.

I'm just going to put this out there... Considering there are reports of this in both the petrol and diesel... Perhaps it's the electric throttle.

I've had this problem for a long time (started off happening every so often about 40k ago) happens at all speeds, all gears, all scenarios.

Feels like a fueling issue: I've been watching some stats on scan gauge to see of I could pin it.

Mines got pretty bad in the last 10,000 so will now have to ask Toyota.

My suggestion is to just put your foot down when it happens: clears it right up.

                          Hi,

Experienced the issue again - twice within 5 minutes of each other. Starting to suspect a fullish tank may be a key indicator here.

At a set of lights turning right, first on the grid. I took off, level road, 8 degrees, normal temp gauge (just under half), full tank (100k travelled since filled), about 2200-2300 rpm, around 40kph and time was 8:20am.

Am about to head off for 3 week trip and hopefully into warmer weather. Will keep monitoring it regardless.

Not sure about the full tank... Had mine do it again this morning and we were just under a quarter (cold engine tough).

                              Hey all

Had what sounds like the same issue with mine a 2012 feb GXL. Just put it into Braossa Toyota for a 20K service and told them about the issue. On pickup they said that it is now on a report and that toyota have found an issue with the ECU and have reprogrammed mine. Since then i have had no issue at all but only dont 500 Km so time will tell.

                              good luck
