  • How do I wire up a brake Controller?

Im trying to fit a brake controller to my Prado, but having a little issue with one wire .The instructions say you need to connect the red brake power wire to the cold side of the brake light switch. Can anyone help me out here I have no idea how to find this cold brake wire on the brake switch.

    thank you.

    Hi Ywork

I connected mine to the Brake light in the back, as I already had to run a wire to the back for the trailer plug I found this easier than trying to connect it ath the brake peddle.

    Cheers

      Hello Ywork,

I connected mine to the brakelight feed to the trailer right at the back of the car, connecting to the brake pedal can affect the brake signals going into the ECU and cause other problems.

In my LR td5 discovery the cruise control was shutdown (I mean shutdown and not simply cancelled) every time I used the brakes with a trailer connected. I had to stop and restart the engine to get cruise back. This became a pain on long drives but taught me not to tow and use cruise control. Connect as far a possible from any computer input connection is a good idea.

      regards

      Ross

Thanks for the advice, does anyone have pictures of the plug connection? My brake wire on the trailer is a black cable on pin 5 of the round plug.
My round plug on the car also has a black cable attached to the same pin thats supposed to be used for blue wire coming from the controller. All the pins have wires connected to them on my vehicle plug. Anyone have a picture of what a standard wired trailer plug should look like.

        thanks

The brake cable that goes to the trailer via the plug should be BLUE. Google trailer plugs wiring and you'll find plenty of images explaining what each of the trailer pins is for.

Just a quick one, I have searched around a bit but not found anything other than someone drilling a hole, but which hole in the firewall have people taken their wiring through? The obvious one looks like A/C right above the brake pedal.

                Cheers

Hey Rod, there would be plenty of examples on this forum of passing cables through the firewall. The easiest is on either top corner of the firewall, you will find a pimple on the large rubber grommet. Just snip the pimple off and pass your cables through..
BTW, i installed my brake controller last weekend folowing the advice of my auto sparky brother.. As your safety may depend on this device he always uses 5mm cable (could get away with 4), connects the device directly to the battery. To get the brake wire and he almost always connects directly to the stop lamp of trailer plug(pin6). I connected to the red wire in the same loom as where the blue wire comes out in the jack compartment because that was easier and given that toyota ran the blue wire there it makes sense. The other thing he does is not use a fuse but rather an automatic reset curcuit breaker.. That way if you have an intermittent short circuit on a downhill run you have some chance of having trailer brakes.

Thanks Cookie, didn't even think of searching just for cables through firewall in general, was figuring it must have been here somewhere! Yet again PP to the rescue!

                      Dear All,

We don't yet have a [camper trailer] although we are preparing for its arrival by installing (1) a 'Tekonsha Prodigy 3' trailer braking system, and (2) a 'Rear Anderson Plug' to our 2006 120 Diesel Auto Prado.

I have followed, and greatly appreciated the comments and questions the this thread, and a few offshoots. It makes the task much easier, however, there is just one small question I would ask?

In the Install notes both on the Tekonsha printed installation document, it specifies a direct connection by both the (+ve), and (-ve) connections DIRECTLY to the battery (which is shown as a realistic line-drawing, with Circuit Breaker etc completing the illustration). My expectation therefore is that the power is NOT IGNITION-Switched?, i.e. it remains actively connected to the battery 24/7, even when 'parked'?.

Question: Is this the case ([OPTION 'A'] an UNSWITCHED connection), or should it be wired via [OPTION 'B'] an Ignition SWITCHED connection.

It must consume some power, unless it otherwise only "wakes-up" following (perhaps) a brake signal or a battery (V++) drop/charge/fluctuate cycle?? (then 'Sleep' if (V++) is static for a while??).

The 'Rear Anderson Plug', I believe, is connected via a "Switched" connection to the battery, so it cannot drain the car battery, unless the ignition is on.

                      With Thanks,

                      Peter

My Anderson plug is direct from the crank battery with no switch at all. Having said that, my camper draws little or no power when it's not set up, when it is set up its almost always disconnected.

My (Redarc) brake controller has its power supplied through a relay, I don't think that was specified but it was convenient for me to go that way.

                        Cheers Andrew

                            Dear All,

[Just following up on my own question (of 2 days ago) now that I have obtained the answer..]

I have checked with the outlet that sold me the Prodigy 3, and they confirm that it is active 24/7, but goes to 'sleep' after 10 minutes when 'idle'.

Hi bworth just remember by law this has to be connected to your crank battery , not your aux if you have dual batteries. Also current draw is minimal until the unit shuts down. Great little unit with a heap of different settings and diagnostics too if anything disconnects without your knowledge. Pendulum system seems to work well
