  • 2012 Red Centre via Oodnadatta & Dalhousie

I'm planning a trip from Melbourne to Ayers Rock and would like some feedback on what to see and where to camp once I am beyond William Creek. I can be self sufficient for 4-5 days and bush camp. I will be single vehicle (other vehicle pulled out) but most of the time there should be some traffic??

    The itinerary so far is Melbourne/Burra/Willow Springs/Farina/Dalhousie Springs/Old Andado Station/Chambers Pillar/Ruby Gap/Alice Springs/Finke River Gorge/Kings Canyon/Ayers Rock/Coober Pedy/somewhere near home/home. I only have 21 days.

I have been through Flinders Ranges before and have decided to camp at Willow Springs and give the skytrek tour a go. Hopefully I have enough time to check out Wilpena Pound properly too.

The Farina stopover is to catch up with some mates coming back from the cape via the Birdsville Track

Once I get beyond William Creek I am in unchartered waters. I know I have to get a desert parks pass (either William Creek hotel or Oodnadatta Roadhouse). Am hoping to also get over a few dunes of the Simpson Desert as I am spending 2 nights at Dalhousie Springs (due to long drive from Farina) and I wouldn't mind having a bit of fun. Was thinking of a picnic lunch somewhere - any thoughts/ideas?

Not sure of the road from Dalhousie to Old Andado nor what camping is available. I believe it is possible. Any suggestions?

I will check out Lamberts Centre and Chambers Pillar. Will camp there unless I have enough time to get to Alice.

Then I want to head out to Ruby Gap. I was thinking of checking out Ndhala Gorge? I only planned 2 days before heading back to Alice. I have never been to the East MacDonalds. Is there anything else out there and is 2 days enough?

Then back to Alice and out to Stanley Chasm and the other gorges and down the Finke River Gorge and on to Kings Canyon. Are permits required here?

From there I plan to head to Ayers Rock/Olgas then turn for home and start hiking it home.

If I have enough time I might go home via Great Ocean Road.

    Thanks in advance.

Top tour. Other spots I would suggest considering is Rainbow Valley (NT) and the Painted Desert (SA).

      G'day TimA,
Just a few suggestions which may of some use to you. I've just got back from the Simmo.
From William Creek it's an easy drive to the Painted Desert (Arkaringa Hills). Camping at Arkaringa Station, hot showers and flush toilets and friendly campfire costs $20 per night for a couple. Highly recommended. From there back through Oodnadatta to Dalhousie via Hamilton Station and Pedirka is an easy day's drive. Just take it easy between Hamilton and Dalhousie as it can be a bit iffy in places. Dalhousie to Mt Dare is a bit ordinary in places, watch out for washouts. Mt Dare to Old Andado via Binns Track is mostly good going. Great camping at Old Andado, great history about the place. Old Andado to Lambert Centre is easy running. If you are looking for a run into the desert from Dalhousie, you could camp at Colson's junction overnight (there is a great spot about 1.5km short of the junction, and return via Colson's track and the rig road to Dalhousie. Don't miss the dip in the springs at Dalhousie.
Hope this may help. Enjoy your experience.
      Cheers, Comprado

Mate the leg between Dalhousie and Old Andado is an easy drive via Mt dare (fuel, supplies and camping) and Bins track. I've only just returned from there and completed the track towing my Jayco Expanda. One word of warning thou, Bins track has a number of washouts that sneak up on you. Also while Old Andado is well worth a look, don't bother camping there as the road crews use it as their camp - well at least while I was there anyway. There are much better road side camps either before or after Old Andado. We camped on the Finke river, just before the town of Finke. Alternatively Lambert's would suit your needs.

If you need fresh supplies, Finke has a great community store. They carry a much better and cheaper range than the roadhouse's you will come across.

Thanks for the information. I have added them to the itinerary. They look like great places and I am so close it would be a pity to miss them.

Its been a while since I was in this neck of the woods but I recall it taking 4 hours to get from Arltunga to Ruby Gap, then a couple of hours for the hike into Glenn Annie gorge and back to camp, so you will burn close to 2 days just seeing Arltunga and Ruby gap both of which are well worth the effort in my opoinion.

Ndhala Gorge is really good as well with all the Aboriginal Petroglyphs, thousands of them and you can spend many hours hiking up and down the gorge looking for more, good camp spot as well and not that popular so you have a good chance of being on your own (we were).

There is a turn off when you go into Trephina Gorge that takes you to John Hayes rock holes, a short hike into the rock holes is good, but if you take the longer hike up the hill and back down the gorge it is magical, the firs tpart of the hike is pretty Ho Hum, but the walk back through the gorge is one of my favourite hikes ever, it does involve some climbing but my wife and then 7 year old son did it as well.

A couple of shots of the gorge.

Its a great trip you have planned, but I doubt you will have time to see the great Ocean Road, too much else to see in the Red Centre!

              Cheers Andrew

Again, thanks for the information. I will try to spend as much time there as I can as I have not seen the East MacDonnell ranges. I plan on being there in September all going well :
