  • Headlight upgrades

This may have been discussed already, but I thought I'd add my experience...

I was looking at adding some extra driving lights recently, and in the course of the research I discovered that there are such things as upgraded bulbs for the standard headlights. I never knew these existed, so I followed that track for a bit, and ended up getting a pair of Philips upgrade bulbs from Coventrys. They claim 80% more light than the standard ones - obviously I can't quantify it numerically, but I'm very impressed with the result. There is improvement on both low and high beam, in fact if anything the improvement on low beam is even more useful than that on high beam - there seems to be more light on the sides of the road, especially on the left. And on high beam those reflective road signs really hit you in the eye! I don't do a lot of night driving and I don't drive very fast, so I reckon I now won't bother with any extra lights - I don't think I'll out-drive these. So the night driving I do is now somewhat more relaxed, and the exercise cost less than $50 and took 10 minutes. And I now have 2 spare headlight bulbs! What's not to like?

And yes, I am aware of the potential problem with overheating wiring when putting in more powerful lights, but there is no issue with these - their wattage rating is exactly the same as the standard bulbs, so there is no more current being drawn.

Did you end up changing the parking lights as well? My pack came with 2 however a quick look in the owners manual and what was written in there "please see your dealer" put some doubt in my mind, is there a trick with the parking lights?

I have also installed upgraded headlight globes, I used Narva Blue Plus 90 and have noticed a difference. Narva lights go to Plus 120, but I wanted a whiter light. The best thing is that they are legal and no wiring modifications required. The pack also included 2 T10 wedge globes for parkers which I have not installed as the original ones work fine (also not sure if they are a T10)

I recently had to replace my Narva Blue Vision globes as they died after only 18 months. Went with some Phillips Crystal Vision this time round and I reckon they are a brighter globe - no official comparison though, and not that the Narva ones were bad as both have been far better than the factory ones.

In answer to the question above, no I didn't replace the parkers as well. The bulbs I bought did not include them.

I managed to replace the parkers, not sure why the manual says it has to be done by the dealer? not a big job but needed to take the battery out for the passanger side

I recently fitted a set of Philips X-treme Vision H4. They are as good if not better than the IPF Fatboys they replaced. Got them on special at Autobarn and they came with a set of parkers.

I have the Philips X-treme too. It's a bit whiter and does look brighter. I got them off ebay from a UK seller and it came with parkers as well.

I have been looking for headlight upgrades as well and have wondered about how good the high beams are on the Philips X-treme compared to the stock standard which I have at the moment? I have a set of 70w IPF HID's which are too bright in some areas I travel so need something in between.

This is the ebay seller I purchased from back in 2010. These probably existed back then but I wonder how good these HID effect globes are in terms of amount of light output compared to the factory or Philips Extreme 100%? Currently, I have the Philips Extreme 80%.

I see here that it is rated at 30% more light

The Phillips are great but have a pretty short service life compared to the OEM globes. Make sure you pack some spares I had mine both blow fairly close together, not a fun situation to be in at night.

That's my experience as well - good lamps while they lasted, just don't last long enough.

                              Cheers,
