  • whine coming from front of engine.......

OK, so driving home from visiting a mate last night and heard what I thought was an emergency services vehicle siren. After checking rear vision mirror, looking around, could not see anything. A few minutes later realized that it was coming from my car!!! It was very faint, but seemed to get slightly lounder on getting home.

This morning I got under the car after thinking maybe i had a loose exhaust and the turbo whistle was a bit louder than normal. couldnt see any leaks (I have an EGT gauge fitted post turbo) and wiggled the flexible joint just back from the first mufler/cat converter. felt a bit loose so went to tighten it but was at maximum. Started up the vehicle and it almost sounds like an alternator bearing, but quiet at idle whistle noise when reving...

I got the missus to come and blip the throttle a few times (damn fly by wire accelerators) and it seems the noise is coming from the front of the engine, around the timing cover?? I have only done just over 37K klms, not sure what is going on....

anyone had or have a similar experience????

Without looking under the bonnet on mine, is the noise anywhere near one of the idler pulleys? The bearings in these can often be the culprit. 37k's (000's I take it)? Shouldn't that be a warranty case?

    Cheers,
    Dusty

Hard to really pick where it is coming from. Yes, warrant case as the vehicle is only 18 months old and 37000 klms on the clock. I am just dubious driving it now as I dont want to damage anything further to what it is, if any...........

Had the same noise on a hilux with the same engine. It was an idler pulley. The noise travelled throughout the engine area so was difficult to identify.
Be careful because mine got worse and seized within a few hundred kilometres.
Ended up failing half way between Charters towers and Townsville while towing the boat on a Sunday.
Thankfully Toyota picked up the towing bill as well as the repairs.

Thats pretty much confirmed it for me, thanks cafiem. As you said it is difficult to work out as the sound appears to be coming from the block, this is exactly what I am experiencing. Do you recall which idler it was? there is one that is readily accessible, I was thinking about taking it off and checking it. I bet they are those f%$#!%!! sealed units so you have to buy the whole idler and cant just replace the bearing....

well I bit the bullet and took the top/easily accessible idler off and it is it is not this idler making the noise, bearing is good. Plus the whole assembly needs to be replaced, cant just replace the bearing. Oh, what a feeling...... (and a bad taste in my mouth).

Just back from dealership, who I must say have provided excellent service with both Toyotas I have bought through them. They have told me the turbocharger is the culprit, and it appears it has a damaged/chiped van on the compressor wheel. they are making application to Toyota to have the whole unit replaced.

Nice to see the dealer being helpful and interesting they went straight to the problem...

hey mate, you didnt manage to record the sound did you mine has made it since i bought it , with 80 000km on the clock, it whines or howls with the speed of the revs under full load you dont hear it as much as you do lower load and revs, i initially thought it was the joint on the exhaust sounds like air escaping or a exhaust leak, but im beginning to think its the turbocharger like what you had said with yours.. i have extended toyota warrenty so im hoping that'l cover whatever it is :S

Occassionally I experience a persistent whine coming from the front left quarter of the cabin, at various revs and speeds, but it is only when my wife is onboard.

Power steering pumps make a whine when the fluid gets low...?

But on a serious note a quick way to determine if the noise is belt related is to dribble some water on the drive belt. Don't get your fingers caught though.
If the noise disappears and then starts again it is belt related. Possible causes are belt wear, or more likely pulley misalignment.

A second way to check if pulley or bearing noise is to remove the belt and run the engine for a sort time. Remember you will have no water pump so keep this short.

We had a alternator clutch bearing fail and it sounded like a turbo wheel hitting the side of the housing. A quick belt off check confirmed it was the alternator so we changed this to the spare one i carry, at a camp site on the Stuart Hwy.
