  • Clarification on Glow Plugs for the KZ-TE engines

Ok so ive been reading about glow plugs dropping tips into engines and freaking myself out so I did a search on this site and became utterly confused when trying to get new glow plugs for my 2003 kz te...there was no clear info. Apologies if i missed it.

i was looking at plugs on ebay and they all stated the following toyota equivalent part number
19850-67020...i rang Toyota just to check the part number and they stated 19850-67030...they also wanted $71 per plug too...get f*&%^*^d!
anyway panic ensues...er nobody is selling this particular one...argh what do i do? do i have to pay toyotas prices? Anyway a bit of digging reveals that toyota re-numbered this part to the 030 from 020. No idea why but i spoke to a couple of autoparts centres and they were confused too. Did a bit more digging and found a good forum post about this on the hilux surf site. Apparently the 020 ones and 030 are one and the same and all will work.

Also worthy of note...Alot of those guys have had trouble getting new glow plugs from a company VSP (the cheap ones) to fit due to carbonisation and a slight design difference in the cheap ones being too wide at the tip. They had no trouble with the bosch ones however. Im getting a set of the german ones and ill let you know how it goes...

to summarise for anybody else looking

    Toyota part no. 19850-67020/19850-67030
    VSP/HJK part no. CP 22
    Bosch part no. GPT 225

Hope this helps someone...if im wrong someone else please let me know soon before i go putting the wrong thing in my engine!

Thanks Barkern, I have a set of eBay plugs in the shed still in their packaging. When I went to replace my 1KZ-TE plugs I noticed that the new plugs were wider at the tip and so I aborted. The seller has claimed ignorance and offered to accept them back so I'll be keen to hear how you go with yours.

You don't have to buy on eBay. Any reputable diesel repair place will either have them in stock or be able to get them. More likely to get the correct fitting one in good quality that way.

got the BOSCH ones in the end and they went in just fine. Actually they went in easier than the old genuine ones came out! The ones that came out were in good condition with a light dusting of soot. ah well better safe than sorry eh?

Further to this i asked about fakes etc and the anti copy packaging and it appears that the grey packaging is only on their top line plugs. This is the response i got from Bosch...

Thank you for your inquiry on Bosch Automotive Replacement Parts and Accessories, received on Wednesday, 6 June 2012.

            In response to your inquiry:
Hi Can you please tell me if you use the fake proof packaging here in australia? i recently got some glow plugs from a seller in Brisbane however the packaging looks to be too basic. They are glow plugs, part no GPT 225 and the packaging is yellow and red, not grey

            Thanks

            We would like to advise:
Thank you for your enquiry. The glow plug GPT-225 comes in the yellow/red packaging. We source glow plugs worldwide and they do come in different packaging. The packaging you described is the correct one for this product range.
Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Please do not hesitate to contact us again if we can be of further assistance.
