Hey Guys,
Any one try installing glasspack mufflers on their 1KZ-TE? Any feedback/comments on doing this?
Looking at this one in particular:
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-630810/
Short background: I upgraded my 120's exhaust to a full 3"in freeflow system back in 2009. The muffler shop copied a FlowMaster muffler's design. It had an oval body but did not have much inside. It was a wee bit loud, so I had a resonator put in. The new exhaust system definitely freed up some horses, making the 1KZ-TE meaner and torquier. Put in a Unifilter drop-in and a DP Chip, and the Prado grew some hair on its chest. A few surprised folks thought I was running a V6 Petrol with the rumble, while a few others must've been thinking that they were offering D-4D engines on the 120 here in the Philippines.
Fast forward to early 2012. Left the Prado with my dad for a weeks while I was away on business. Came back, and he mentions he's swapped out the muffler coz it had already rusted portions. The exhaust pipes I had installed were only made of block iron, but for the vehicle's usage here, that was enough. The muffler he had put in was a stainless steel (looked nice and shiny) free flow muffler also with an oval body. It was quieter than the Flowmaster. Looked nice, but didn't perform quite well. Whereas I just needed to pump the gas a little bit before, now, I sometimes have to floor the pedal to get the Go that i want.
Back to the glass packs: Saw someone offering an 18" long glass pack muffler, 3" diameter. I figured that it's noisier than the free flow I have now coz of a smaller body, but with the resonator I already have, it just might be quiet enough, giving me back my old performance.
Any thoughts? Thanks.
