  • Front strut spacers

    Hi mates!

I just got a front aftermarket bumper and I think the front coils maybe down a little when I installed. I have 880 OME coils on front.

1/2" Topout spacer on front to compensate the weight??? Or 2 or 3 trim packers each side on front??

It seems ARB recommends no more than 2 trim packers on each side ( 5mm ). Somebody knows why, because Ironman sells a 15mm trim packers for their struts:

If Ironman can, why not OME?

I don't like spacers but I`m contemplating that idea because the coils I have are just about a year of medium/light use. Are practically new. Upgrade to others coils would be the best but I can't do it right now.

Any additional information would br appreciate it!

    Thank you!

ARB might only recommend 5mm spacers due to the length of the studs.
The 10/15mm ones are meant for Ironman struts only and it may have longer studs.

Just be aware that on the front, it is approximately a 1:2 ratio. So 1mm spacer = 2mm lift (roughly).

      Hello amts!! Thanks for responding.

The length of the studs??? The Ironman trim packers and OME trim packers fit below the spring bucket, at the bottom of the spring.

Haven't seen that sort of spacer before. the ones I have seen go between the top cap of the strut and the chassis mount

or one that sits inside the bucket

If the coil bucket is separate from the shock, then I don't see why you can't go for the higher spacer.

I noticed this spacer a while back, says it gives a 2"lift with the spacer.
Slightly different to the ironman one, and more expensive, but does "look" stronger

          Geoff

Im not Bogged - I've just lost traction. . . . . and now I'm showing the wife why I bought those Maxtrax, and the tyre deflator, and the compressor, and the bullbar, and the winch, and a lot of other goodies I've hidden in the Prado

1st one it a top spacer - keeps the existing coil/shock rates unchanged, just lifts the vehicle. Associated risks if lifted high, are generally around CV shaft length, upper arms / coil binding.

2nd one is some kind of coil spacer, which requires the coilover to be dissembled for installation - it'll change the coil/shock rate and also provide lift. Associated risks are over-extending the shock (plus the above mentioned risks if lifted high).

            Another top spacer.

The picture MDST posted is a trim packer, which like the coil spacer (2nd one mentioned above), requires the coilover to be dissembled for installation. I think this is the style of spacer to use if trying to recover <20mm of height, which was lost due to accessory weight. I don't think they should be used for adding additional lift though... because the shock may be over-extended. To increase lift beyond the original coilover's design (eg, 2"), the top spacer comes in.
            glen_ep - engineered, 4" lift, 33" 255/85R16, lockers, 4.88 ratios www.pradopoint.com.au/showthread.php?17237 www.youtube.com/user/glenep www.fb.com/groups/ToyotaPrado90

It doesn't change the coil/shock rate but it does add preload which results in lift.
