  • Rear Main oil leak?

Was under the car today greasing the tail shafts after some water crossings on the weekend when I noticed some oil weeping around the auto bell housing. Was a small amount but I did do some crossings on Sunday.
Obviously being only 6 months old/ 13000km I will be going to Toyota tomorrow but was wondering if anyone else has had similar leaks and what was the cause.

    Cheers,
    Dusty

From the flood of replies I guess I must be the first with the problem! Went into the dealer who could not pin down the source of the leak. Tried blaming spilt oil from previous service, so washed the bell housing and sent me home. Was asked to drop back in a week and sure enough leak has increased. Gearbox comes out next week to find cause, but my money is on rear main seal. They did mention an inspection plate in the rear of the block behind the bell housing possible being the culprit, but the mechanic didn't think so.
Really hope this is a one off and not the start of a lemon.

    Cheers,
    Dusty

Pretty sure it's engine judging by the smell/ colour. So far Toyota have been great, just hope that keeps up. If it is a rear main seal though it's very low K's for that I thought and how? Crooked seal on install or worse, defective/ damaged crank? Well I suppose I'll find out on Wednesday.

        Cheers,
        Dusty

P.s. Does anyone know about the inspection plate they are talking about?

When they pull the gear box out, ask for a photo of the inside of the bell housing just before they put it back together. If they don't clean off the oil from the torque converter and you get dust/dirt in there over time, you'll chew out the seal. You'd think cleaning up the mess would be common sense but I don't know after my last two services at Toyota. I recently had warantee work done and one of the exhaust nuts came back a mashed mess. My guess is that one of the nuts was tight and the mechanic ended up rounding it off then had to file a flat surface onto it to get it out. Didn't even have the decency to replace with a new nut. Don't know what's happening with young tradesmen these days, they don't seem to have pride in their work.

If you look at the bottom of the bell housing there's a foam/rubber block approximately 200x75mm in size. I'm assuming this pops out and is the inspection hole.

Well the rig went in this morning and it's confirmed, leaking rear main seal. Only talked to the office chick so far so not sure on the cause yet. Found it hard to believe they had to order a seal o'night and one wasn't in Cairns. I can only imagine how many of these motors are in and around Cairns, not to mention all the holiday traffic. Maybe that's an indication of the rarity of the issue? I can only guess.

Anyway hopefully tomorrow I'll have a better idea to the cause.

            Cheers,
            Dusty

Bloody part didn't show up, #%$&! So now waiting another day. If this rolls into the weekend I'll be pissed! We're a one car family at the moment and no car all week end won't go down well!

Not yet, it's a satellite service shop so they don't have vehicles, but if it goes into the weekend I'll definitely be getting onto the main dealership.

                        My sympathies dusty,
toyota in Cairns suffers the same probelms as most other businesses up here. Poor supply networks between here and Brisbane, Sydney etc mean order in products coming from major centres always take longer than expected and are subject to ever higher and higher freight costs.
The only way ive found around this is to have them air-bag the parts up here, easy for small things but doesn't help with large items or glass and of course it costs extra again but at the advantage of overnight delivery.
Cairns may be a country town but why do we get treated as second rate customers sometimes??

Yeah mate, everything to do with the car has been delayed. Purchase, accessories, you name it. This was one seal, in an airbag (apparently), but didn't make the plane. Hopefully here and repaired tomorrow.

You can thank the "lean" methodology for that, all about just in time supply and making sure that there is no waste, works really well in areas where just in time delivery is possible, however anyone who lives outside a capital city knows that it will never work, even in capital cities the lack of stock means delays to wait for parts coming out of Japan, hardly just in time

Well it was the rear main as mentioned earlier, but the mechanic had already knocked off by the time I arrived to pick it up. The bloke in the office was pointing towards the seal being damaged before or during installation. If that's the cause I'll be pretty happy, I suppose the next 15000k's will be very closely watched!
