  • Bad consumptiion 1KZ-TE 2006 VX

Hi guys need some SENSIBLE help here. I have a 2006 VX 3L 1kz-te 4 speed auto,
Accessories ARB bull bar, Warn 9.5 winch, ORS aluminiium drawers, milford barrier, DPchip , Beaudesert mandrel exhaust, Cooper ST 17's

The above gear is always on board I have fridge roof rack that I take away on trips.

Last year we went to the Cape and averaged 12.6/100 (with 2 adults and a teenager with associated gear 8000 k's round trip)

No other changes since then but the truck has suddenly become very thirsty averaging 17/100 unloaded

Any sensible suggestions about what could be happening to suddenly change in the fuel area

    Regards

    M

Gday allenz... I feel your pain. to ask the obvious - has your driving style changed??? Towing a camper will make you chew more fuel!!! LOL...First things I would be thinking is it needs a good service... An old or blocked air filter will make your car chew more fuel and lose a bit of power, change your fuel filter and get some injector cleaner thru the tank. On top of that, I would be checking for any air leaks from the air filter box to the turbo to the inlet manifold and for any fuel leaks under the car and in the engine bay... How may k's has your car done? I noticed you have a 1kzte - Have you blocked your EGR and cleaned your throttle body out and the inlet mainfold of the black goo that builds up?? Thats the kind of angle I would be looking at for starters... If nothing changes after doing all of this I would be looking towards a problem with your injectors or injector pump.... also making friends with a good diesel mechanic helps alot!

Allenz, you have got me thinking... jack your car up and check to see if you have any dragging brakes... you may have a few pistons seizing in your calipers creating drag... just a thought mate...

I imagine you will get some SENSIBLE suggestions if for a start by giving some information that may help.

How many K's, service record, has the timing belt been changed, filters changed, have you tried it without the chip, is the exhaust unobstructed/undamaged, how long has it had poor economy (how many tanks), does it start ok in the cold canberra mornings etc

I also have a thirsty 1kz-te in a 05 grande its the auto aswell. my fuel consumption has gone through the roof too. when i bought the car four years ago it was running at about 12-13 lt/100 standard. As I've been bolting bits on it has been slowly climbing and was running about 15 lt/100 i fitted new tyres maxis bighorns 265/70/17 and lifted the car by 50mm it has jumped up to 17 lt/100!

So, i replaced my injectors seeing as it has done 280,000km cleaned all the crap out of the inlet manifold, it was pretty bad!! Blocked off the EGR valve and have been running round for a week now..........

          Still running at 17 lt/100!!!

Im thinking a fuel injected 5lt holden engine would be more fuel economical!! do you think i could fit one in?? Ha Ha

Are your 1KZ-TE motors the D4D versions? I have a 1999 1KZ-TE which is not common rail - the later models (2001>) are all D4D over here.

My fuel economy has crept up to around 12.5-13 lt/100 with 265/75's AT's, 50mm lift & roofbars. I'm trialing a water injection system at the moment which has made a nice improvement to pick up and overall power (butt dyno), and I'm hoping I can get the consumption down to 11 lt/100 with some fine tuning.

This could be an issue...for example try riding a normal bike on the road and then get on a mountainbike with knobbly tyres and see how much harder it is to pedal.

Unfortunatley my comp tester only goes up to 250 psi, i think my car would blow the ass out of it!!

I was hoping there is something else causing it rather than tires as I like the new ones and don't want to have to take em off.......

I recently had this happen and just did an oil, air and fuel filter change. It fixed the problem straight away. Was running up around the 16l per 100. Now back around 12.3per 100.

i recently was getting 17/100 no matter what ,i checked the codes and had a code on the accelerator ,cleared the code, and went straight to 14/100 around town and hills , which seems more realistic .hoping for less on the open road........ so check your codes first

I've got a 04 diesel auto and my consumption is around the 16-17 mark. Just about to do a service so I will see if that fixes it.
                              What is the EGR valve?
                              Cheers, Josh
