  • Catch Can Install

    Hi all,

I think I've done a pretty thorough search of the forum and can find nothing on installing a catch can in any D4D model. Mine is a 1KD and there have been a couple of post with questions but no answers. Has anyone out there bought one, made one, installed one? I removed my intercooler a couple of months ago and clean out the intake throat but the next job is to clean the intake manifold. After I do this I don't want to have to do it again so if someone can point me to where I can purchase or make up a catch can AND how to install it would be greatly appreciated.

There is plenty of catch cans available form online racing sdtores and ebay.

You basically just plumb a line or two (1/2 " +) to the rocker cover. Then into the can.

One trick I have learnt from the ones we install on race cars is to make sure there is a bottom drain with a hi temp (teflon) ball valve on it so you can drain it. The top should have a breather filter.

    Thats it.
    Easy.

Or you could negate the need for a catch can by making sure your mechanic doesn't overfill your engine with oil.

        D4D,

I have done all my own oil changes since new and have never overfilled the oil, yet at 100K the intake throat and inlet manifold were coated with crud (see link below)

        I don't understand your comment?

Its not from over filling with oil but from the exhaust gas recirculation. If you block that off then it wont crud up. There is a thread about it. Maybe search 'D4D block'

It's my understanding after reading numerous threads that whilst you can safely block the EGR system in the 1KZ model, you cannot do this in the 1KD. Have a read through this one and you'll see what I mean

I could swap you my blanked off 1kz for your 1kd. No need for thanks - thats just the kind of guy I am.

So I guess I'm up the proverbial? Oil spec is OK, oil level is OK. Apart from cleaning out the intake throat & manifold every 80-100K, I'm back to installing a catch can. And I'm still none the wiser on how to install one. Piggy's comment above "You basically just plumb a line or two (1/2 " +) to the rocker cover" leave a lot of unanswered questions. Tap into existing lines? What lines? Where from/to? If I purchase a catch can from an "online racing stores" (geez what the heck is that?) is it a specific can for a Prado or are they generic? Do they come with fitting instructions?

                  G'day Bidla,
I have installed a catch can on my 150 d4d. Bought one of eBay (the square shiny aluminium type with the sight tube). As most catch cans are just an empty container I made up an internal baffle and used filter foam on the inlet side just to slow down the air flow and catch all of the oil mist.
Have some photos somewhere, I have to admit that I meant to post this but just did not get around to it. It is very very easy, a bit of rubber hose, turn the existing bend from the rocker cover 180 degrees job done. The most difficult part was making up a bracket to mount the can using existing holes on the rhs of the engine bay..

As mentioned will get some more photos tomorrow and post.

                  regards
                  Geoff

As mentioned here are some photos of my catch can install.

Catch can mounted showing the bracket

Just another view of the can and mount. The blue hose is my compressor outlet.

This one shows the hose coming out of the rocker cover

Just showing the hoses. With the hose going up from the rocker cover this may help stoping the oil getting to the can so I guess I have double insurance now, maybe triple with the filter foam in there (think I may have gone a bit overboard)

                      Thanks Footoo,

Does the can have a brand name? What did it cost you?

                        G'day Bidla,
this is the one I bought of Ebay. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Square-Oi...item3a74782e9e cost $45.

There are others there, just did an ebay search for "oil catch can". there was a cheapy right at the top of the list.
                        http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Unverisal...item337583d5f8

At the end of the day they are all pretty similar until you get up into the high end cans. I riveted a divider and support for the filter foam in mine but I don't know that it is really necessary.

Many thanks footoo, a question about the internal foam. I assume when you buy one they're just an empty "can". Do you just purchase some sort of foam (oil resistant?) into the can? Do you wash it out every service?

Yes, all of the cheaper cans are empty cans. The internal foam is called "filter foam" got it from Clark Rubber and as far as I am aware it is oil resistant. Have only had it connected for about 5000Ks and to date there is no sign of oil in the sight tube and I don't expect to have to touch it for about 20 to 30 thousand Ks. My theory is any oil will drain out of the foam as it is in the top half of the inlet side (rocker cover hose).

                            Hope this helps

                              Just a quicky footoo,
I've hooked up many a catch can on non turbo and turbo petrol motors but I can't see here where your return is plumbed. Is it on the pre turbo side of the intake? That's the logical spot I suppose. This would help suck the vapor from the can otherwise it will pool in the lines.

                              Cheers
