  • Installing Tekonsha P3 and some....

So, I went shopping with Derek at ABR Sidewinder and he has hooked me up with some new bits and pieces, I also have a Tekonsha P3 on its way, I plan on doing the ashtray install.
I have been doing some reading both here and MySwag about my current mod list, both Tekonsha and camper wiring, but I need to know how to test if my 120 has had the "Hotwire" installed to the trailer plug.
In addition to the brake controller, I am setting up ready for a new camper (yet to be purchased) and would like to have the ability to charge the camper (already have the rear Anderson installed, tested and working), but I want to be able to run the fridge on 12v whilst driving. I believe this should not be done via the single Anderson connection.

Currently I have, 100Ah Gel aux battery, Projecta 100amp smart solenoid, 100amp and 30amp circuit breakers on the aux battery, 30amp at the rear to run fridge in car and some other bits, hooked up to 6 way powered fuse block.
I also have 6B&S cable running directly from my aux battery to the rear Anderson.
What else do I need.. Do I need to run more cable, front to rear?
If the Hotwire does not exist, how do I wire one up, is the standard Toyota trailer plug compatible?

    Soooo many questions.

I have fitted the Tekonsha P3 to my 120 series Prado (2004 model) and had to run a cable from the brake controller through to the rear trailer plug, there was no 'hotwire'. Maybe this has changed on the D4D? The wire connects onto pin 5 of the 7 pin flat type trailer plug or small round trailer plug. If you have the large heavy duty round trailer plug then pin 7 (centre pin) is the one that you want. You may find that there is already a blue wire connected to this pin, if so just follow it back to see where it terminates.

If you have a factory towbar loom, the 'blue' wire will be in the jack space with the relays for the rest of the trailer plug stuff.

Thanks mate, thats what I'm looking for, yes, I have the factory tow bar.

Getting onto the other question. Do I need to run a second pair of 6B&S front to back to run the fridge while driving? I already have one pair running for the Anderson, which will be used for charging the camper battery while driving...

D4D, you have a fridge motion switch don't you? How is this wired up? From the car, or just within the camper??

I would run a second run of 6B&S for the fridge. If you piggy back off the existing run the fridge will run however the battery won't be charged properly. Chester had this problem so I am not talking theory. He ended up just not powering his fridge when on the move.

Yes I have a fridge switch, it is wired behind the fridge in the camper, 30 min job. Checkout my build thread on myswag.

As always, thank you. I'll 'buy' some 6B&S at work tomorrow . I have Anderson plugs and crimper on order.
I'll probably ask this question again when I get a camper, but do I need to install a run direct to the fridge in the camper, i.e. two Andersons at the A frame, one running to the battery, the other direct to the fridge? As i type this, it sound obvious, but I want to do it right, do it once...

            Cheers mate.

Depends how your camper is wired. Most likely the fridge is wired via the reverse pin on the 7 pin plug. I would rewire direct to the fridge.

                  Well, it has all arrived.
Brake controller and two brackets, was not made clear that the folding bracket comes in the box with the controller, but anyway.

The preconfigured wiring kit from ABR Sidewinder should make it all easier.

D4D thanks for your input too.

                    OK, so, its in....
I'll chuck up some photos later, but for the moment, one question....

How do I turn the bloody thing off??

It is all wired up OK, tests OK, but I thought it was supposed to turn after a period of inactivity?
There was not on/off switch, there was no mention of getting power an AUX source, just wire direct to battery with 20Amp circuit breaker..

                    Any ideas??

Mr Google told me I need to hook up a trailer and configure it before it will auto power down.

Is Mr Google correct? If so, I'll just leave it unplugged until I can hook up to a trailer.

The hot-wire you mention earlier should be pin 2, and requires a direct (still fused) supply from the main battery. This pin would ordinarily be used for the reverse light. Although, when I did the install on Dave's (sapradogxl) prado i was unawre of this requirement.

If i remember correctly - the P3 was connected to pin 5 of the trailer plug, which lines up with some of the posts above.

In hindsight after this was installed - if a standard tralier has a reverse light on it, as the reverse light is fed from pin 2, then it would be constantly on - can be fixed by either removing the fuse when not required or by installed a switch in the rear panel where the jack is for simple on/off. I personnally would go for pulling the fuse - less parts to fail...

To check if you have a hot wire, connect a multimeter or 12v lamp between pin 2 of the plug and a body earth (or the earth pin - but i can't remember the number).

Definitely a better idea to run a separate 6B&S supply via an anderson plug mounted around the same area as the tralier plug (as most people do) just remember that you are fitting a 50A anderson and as such the inline fuse at the battery connection should be no greater than 50A also - even though the cable is rated for a higher current.

I am under the impression that the P3 should switch off after 15 minutes of no movement. It bases this on the accelerometer chip internal to it (replaced the old school pendulum) even climbing in and out of the car can be enough to keep the unit on. It has been a while since I played with one however and the exact details of this i can't remember.

Again, i know from the install on the petrol i did that we did check to see if it would switch off and it took a while to work out why it wasn't - think it is in the manual.

Note: the hot-wire may not be required for all electric brakes - it may only be a requirement for the 'big' ones. The trailer we wired up for was for a very large ski boat!!! This would have to be confirmed, i've never used electric brakes before.

Agreed Matt.... You always have the best answer for everything.... Plus, as you said, you install in my car was spot on, but the power needs to have a dedicated power supply to pin 2...

Will need this to be hooked up in the new 150..... SOunds like a working bee!!!!
