  • Turbo Whittle when cold

    Hi all

My altitude, now 1800km old, has a low whistle when cold. It starts at about 1500rpm when accelerating. I assume this is when the turbo fires up? Its not the normal turbo high pitch whistle. Its quite loud and is more of a strong low pitch. Once the engine is hot, which takes about 4-5 mins or so :cry:it stops. Just gets quieter and goes.

Whilst im getting used to it is does sh** me a bit. Started at about 500km

I intend to get it looked at at the 6 month service but wondered if others had similar experiences?

    cheers

The turbo whistle is fairly audible on takeoff and under load, the whistle should rise and fall as you accelerate and decelerate.
The other explanation could be the Prado drone - plenty of info on this and how to rectify on other threads

      Hi Kev

Yeh I know the whistle you mean, This one is much lower and stops once the engine is hot, it doesnt do it any more under any load or acceleration.

No, the Prado drone is another thing ....you alway feel that the engine is struggling and wants tyop drop into 5 th all the time, I often drive in S mode 4th around town. In fact I use S mode quite a bit for deceleration etc , cant help it after owning manual forever.

      thanks for the reply

        Do you have a snorkle?
If so it could be a leak somewhere in the system, perhaps.

          Hi rugbynut,

I've heard the same noise on a brand new demonstrator D4D Altitude when test driven couple of weeks back.
I know the noise well as my 120 D4D was doing the samething a few years back after owning it for 12months or so.
I too had the noise mainly when cold and after approx 10-15mins it dissapeared.
My solution on the 120 was replacement of the exhaust flange gasket ($22 part from Toyota) which is located under the drivers side between the rear and front drivers side door. You'll see the exhaust flange as the bolts have springs for adjustment where the exhaust clamps together. Upon inspecting the flange gasket it showed slight signs of wear. I think that this noise though is a common characteristic of the D4D engine and exhaust and the noise differs somewhat from car to car as i've heard it before on other Prado's aswell with some noisier than others. It might pay though to check that flange gasket.

          cheers,
          Stewy

That makes some sense, as it would be temp related as the system heats up and seal perhaps? I will check it out tonight.

            cheers
