    Hi all I have just bought a Ctek D250s DUAL and a SMARTPASS to fit in my 120 Prado between my main battery and my 2 deep cycle batteries, 1 under bonnet and one in the back.Just wondering if anyone has fitted a setup like this and how and where they put the units.I assume they are best mounted together and close to the batteries. My problem is I have no room under the bonnet.I can mount them in the rear but not sure how big the cable would need to be to run front to rear and if there would be a voltage drop problem with the 2 extra batteries being apart. Any help would be great thanks.

    Don't go any less than 13.5mm (6 B&S) or the voltage loss will be under 12.8v which will make the Ctek cut out.
    You could also use one of LeighW's or Derek's (ABR) booster diodes.

      Thanks for that guys, I have a 30m roll of 8b&s twin core I will connect the 2 auxillary batteries with this with a 100amp resettable circuit breaker at each end and the same with the Ctek to the start battery

        Hi Timmo23. and as above, the minimum size cable would be 6B&S ( 13.5mm2 ) not the smaller 8B&S ( 7.9mm2 ).

        You need to reduce your voltage drop as much as possible and using 8B&S will increase your voltage drop, BUT, if you have surplus 8B&S run two RED and two BLACK.

        Next and this is important, you will not get any safe protection from a 100 amp auto resetting circuit breaker with 8B&S cable.

        When used in a dual battery system, 8B&S has a maximum safe CONSTANT current carrying capacity of 65 amps, not 100.

        Furthermore, all automotive auto resetting circuit breaker ( and fuses ) are SPECIFICALLY designed to be able to handle 135% of their marked rate for around 30 minutes.

        This means if you use a 100 amp circuit breaker with 8B&S cable, you will actually be able to have load of twice the safe maximum current load passing though the cable for around 30 minutes without tripping the circuit protection.

        Add this to the fact that while a dead short would still trip a 100 amp circuit breaker in a safe timely fashion, the problem is that in dual battery set ups there is a far greater risk of current overloads than there is from a dead short.

        So to make your set up both safe and effective, you need 6B&S twin cable, protected against both short circuits and current overloads, fit a 50 amp auto resetting circuit breaker and even if you choose to run two 8B&S cables for the positive and negative circuits in your dual battery system, a 50 amp auto resetting circuit breaker is still as large as you can safely go.
