  • Mud inside the airbox!

Whilst making space to simplify install procedure for my large aux battery tray I pulled out the air box. Interested to find the following greet me when I popped the cover off.

This is courtesy of the recent trip to Ormeau Hills and a couple of decent mud puddles that did cause a fair bit of splatter under the bonnet due to the fan picking up the mud. Considering how small the drain holes are, that mud was trying very hard to get in.

The air filter did it's job fine and just had a spattering on the foam bit that lines the underside of the filter itself.

Anyhow, while I had it all apart I though others might be interested to see the set up of the airfilter box.

This pick shows the air intake that sits up under the mudguard.

A little mud in there but clearly not where it gained entry to the box in this instance. Snorkel is on the way so that should sort the intake out for the furture anyway.

This pick shows the airbox with the intake shroud removed.

The inlet is a decent set up that is designed to make the air spin as it enters and throw off anywater which can then drain through the rubber bung. Looks like it would do a good job of trapping most of the water if it was only a small splash. What didn't get caught here could then drain thrown the inner holes, if they are not blocked with mud that is!

Now, as for protecting the airbox from mus spatter under the bonnet, I think I might need to design a simple "ABMD-150" (Air Box Mud Deflector 150). Even with the 105AH battery now in there it still leaves a clear line from near the fan to the air box. A simple piece of rubber adhered as a shroud beside the drain holes should protect it enough.

G'day Wazza. I found the very same thing in my Airbox at the filter on my V6 120 following a previous trip to Ormeau. (probably from the same stinky cess-pool too!) Instant justification to SWMBO that a Snorkel is necessary. However her wish list appears to take precedence over my wish list....

Yeah the cost of a snorkel is minimal compared to the repair bill if it did get a belly full of gunk.

You'll have to keep working on getting SWMBO on side. If I work out the secret to success in that area I'll let you know. I have a major mod list awaiting the green light and the snorkel is about 1/10 of the total bill.......
