  • Intermittent rough idle

Hey all, this one just started after a 1000k drive to the coast last week for a family emergency, the rough idle comes and goes, and when it's occurring when idling say at the lights and moving it feels as tho it chugs, I had my 80k service done just over 3000k ago. I've had my injectors & turbo already replaced last yr under warranty, air filter is clean, it's wierd cause it comes and goes. Car runs fine whilst driving at any speed above an idle. I have an extended Toyota warranty, so will drop it into them if it gets worse, but would still like to know if anyone has had this happen.

    Cheers

    Craig

    hey there craig,

I am going thru the exact problem at the moment... after injector treatments and a compression test I started actually thinking. If it runs well all the time and its rough at idle I figured its got to be starved of fuel. It has been mainly happening to me in the morning after having the car sit all night, so i made the point of pumping the fuel primer on top of the fuel filter every morning before start up. What do you know, the car was idling sweet. When I started asking around, my mate at TJM in Mackay told me that the primers have a rubber diaphrahm in them and over time they do get pin holes in them, causing air to enter the fuel system... So next time it happens, pop the bonnet and start pumping- I bet it idles sweet... therefore you may be up for a Priming pump... $120 & 6 week wait from japan my friend! I have 5 weeks to go....

Any other info you come up with on this would be appreciated also mate!

    Cheers.. Drew

Well the big white girl went into Toyota this morning to get the rough idle checked, just had a call with very interesting news, no 4 injector is way out of spec....... Now what surprises me is that my injectors were only replaced late last year under warranty... So just waiting on word back about the new warranty claim. They are gonna hurt

Had an idle problem on 08, turned out after much searching and hair pulling to be the hyd engine mount on one side was gone. They are supposed to adjust to idle to help with diesel rattle (who new and i'm an engin ear). Problem solved. It also had some vibration turning right with load on front left (was left engine mount). Good luck

I've had the rough idle twice since buying the Prado new in 2007. Both times idled rough at traffic lights. It seemed to chug when in drive, but slip her in neutral, idled good. First time diagnosed engine mount, replace under warranty. Second time Toyota had the car for three separate days checking fuel injectors etc. Ended up being engine mount AGAIN. Replaced engine mount, I had to pay half. Seems to be a problem with the diesel's. Will see how long this one lasts (12 months so far!

Ghost, would be interested to see how you get on once the injector is replaced. I've also got the shakes in my 08 at idle. I actually had the engine light come on and when Toyota plugged it in they traced the error code back to 1 injector well out of spec' and 2 more on their way out. I checked with another bloke who knows Toyota inside and out. He said both the rough idle and the louder rattle are symptoms of stuffed injectors. He reckons the problem is that Toyota don't use a filter with water seperator, and that this can be done after market for less than $500. Worth doing when you consider the injectors are $600 - $900 a pop, and if water damages the pump it's a $7,000 fix!

Will let you know how things go Parso, I will also hit them up about the water separator, I have heard if u do fit one they can void your warranty, but will speak with them direct and see.

A bit of an update, rang and spoke to Toyota yesterday.... To be told that they can't find the information about the no 4 injector issue..... Was told they would call me back at 12pm today.... Well as we all know that doesn't ever really happen.... Called at 1400 spoke to the same person.. Who appologiesed as they always do... Started to say I don't have warranty, I promptly shut her down, to then be told that she will speak to someone and get back to me in 10mins.... 15mins later.. Yay! A phone call, turns out it may have fallen by the wayside, but this issue goes under a parts replacemt warranty (due to only being replaced 7months ago) so a slightly different process... But should hear back next week, she advised they only want to do no. 4 injector. Not all of them, told them in not happy with that and want all 4 replaced again. Will hear next week how things are going...

Further update from my injector issues, the warranty guys are playing pass the buck, I had a call to have it back in ASAP for further investigation. So will be going in Monday, i am dealing directly with the workshop Forman now. Will be asking them to check the oil pick up screen aswel,

Losing confidence in the prado model, and devistated that I sold my 90 series v6, never gave me any dramas.

Update...... Well the saga continues, the big girl went in yesterday for further testing and investigation, they then approved the warranty on the no4 injector. Replaced it. But they are now having issues with the other 3 not compensating..... Had it overnight, spoke to them again this morning, the issues still persist, they are looking at again replacing no4 with another injector to see if this resolves the issue...... Will keep you all posted.

Final update..... Hopefully...... Got the big white girl back, turns out when entering they were entering the compensation code that they might have got a couple of digits/ numbers mixed. Sorted now. Let's hope this is now the last of my injector issues! I also spoke to the forman about installing an aftermarket additional filter, he said that he reccomends it and they would be willing to fit it to stop any warranty issues. Will be getting this in writing tho

                          Guys

Can anyone explain the process of replacing the injectors, is it just as simple as getting new one and replacing them?

                          Cheers

Hi taz, im not a mech by any standards but after speaking to the forman yesterday, the replacing of the injector is relatively straight forward, but you need the Toyota computer thing to input the compensation code into the ecu of the car, if you don't have this then the injectors wont run at there optimal. The reason this happens is that although they try and get the injectors 100% alike it's impossible, an because the common rail systems are meant to be so efficient they then use these compensation codes (stamped on top of Each injector from factory) once the codes are inputted into the ecu.
the ecu then knows to adjust the flow rate, timing etc to get all four injectors running at their best, if you don't have the computer and can't input the codes then the car will run like a dog, (basically cause it isn't tuned). Hopefully this helps a little

Anyone else feel free to clarify further.

                            Cheers

                              Thanks Ghost

I wonder if its possible to install the injectors and then take the car to Toyota to have them do their stuff.
