  • Induction howl or Drone - Ive had enough!

Now before anyone recommends that I search the forum for answers, Ive read the entire thread on the drone, and I am still at a loss.

Picked up the new prado 3 weeks ago, and immediately noticed the sound. Throttle dependant at all speeds. I read the drone thread and being that I was always going to fit a snorkel I didn't worry too much and I just tolerated it. Well today, I had a snorkel fitted (hoping this would solve the problem) but nothing has changed.

The sound is definitely coming from the drivers side engine bay, and the best way that I can describe the sound is an intake howl. It doesn't vary pitch very much but it certainly does change in volume. Even with the drivers window down and sticking your head out the window, it is still very noticeable. It almost sounds like a cat moaning.

It goes back in on Friday for its first service and I'll be asking them about it along with a few other issues (squishy sound from the brake pedal when depressed) but I don't hold too much hope of a toyota mechanic having any idea.

Im hoping someone here might be able to offer some advice.

    That's the turbo....

But in all seriousness I've got no idea.

That squishy brake pedal sound is normal though.

Not sure if this is the same issue as youre experiencing but have a read here (if you haven't already) D4D Vibration at 1500rpm . There's some solutions found at the back of the thread....

Thanks Craig. I have read that entire thread but after having the snorkel fitted yesterday and no difference in the howling I am wondering whether it is something else. I might have to just try the matting and see what happens.

I have a D4D with about 1400 km on the clock. It makes a howl/whistling noise when cold above about ~15oo rpm. Once it heats up (3-5mins) it stops. I assume its the turbo, but damn annoying. Cant hear it with the windows and radio up though....haha

Why would the turbo be noisy initially, then stop when the engine heats up. Nothing sinister I hope. Anyone else have this issue?

Not sure if its the same as your noise Seratonin, but your description is pretty close

All turbos whistle.. Thats what they do.

They make more whistle noise under load while they are on boost.

Its not the turbo whistling, as that's a seperate sound. The howling happens when cold and hot, more noticeable at lower speeds as there is less wind noise. I might try just driving down the street with the air box undone and see if that changes anything.

                  I wouldn't recommend that.

It could just be the sound of a diesel... They sound very different if you haven't had one before.

I know this suggestion might be out there but maybe something to look into.

Tyres, are they feathering? Unlikely on new road tyres but possible cause. I know when my oldman put a set of new tyres on his 100series it drove him mad for ages.

I hear the same noise (I think) and have done since new (now 30k). I think they all do it and I have just put it down to a characteristic of the 150's turbo setup . It's not turbo whistle but I do believe it's associated to the turbo. Maybe it's due to the location of the intercooler?

                        Serotonin,

I am having a similar issue. Sounds like the intake howl, but only when it is cold.

When I recently bought 10 years old Land Cruiser 120 (aka Prado, but in UK it is called simply LC), I didn't notice anything because the engine was hot. When I started the car the next morning, I noticed this sound, which is very ver annoying. It slightly changes with RPM, and appears after ~1500 rpm. It dissapears (or at least softens a lot) once the car gets warm, and you almost don't hear it then. However, if you do short trips (like my wife does), and every single morning I hear this annoying drone or induction sound, whatever you call it.

I get very annoyed and decided to change the turbo as 3 separate mechanics told me the sound is probably not harmful, but definitely related to the turbo.

Because the new turbo was very expensive, I decided to go for a remanufactured one. I found the company that does business together with independent mechanic. So they tried two different turbos (although they charged me for only one; they felt their fault because of mis-diagnostics; the second turbo they tried was literally new one, only 5kmiles, but still with all bearings replaced), and with all of them sound is still there. Slightly different than before, but still there.

What I did next was crazy. I asked that mechanic to take apart the whole inlet system and take the exhaust manifold out. He changed every single gasket, cleaned inlet manifold, egr vave (it was full of carbon), swirl flaps, outlet manifold, etc. At the end the sound became noticeanly softer, and now it takes only 4 minutes to become not noticeable compared to 15 minutes before (I believe that clean EGR valve helped as it heats the intake manifold quicker now).

Anyways, I spent ~1000 UK pounds trying to get rid of this noise with no luck - only softened it a bit and made it dissapearing faster. After cleaning the intake system engine works much smoother BTW..., so not total waste of money

I decided to live with it as some people here have it from almost brand new, so what can I do...

Also, Toyota dealer told me it was ok for LCs to have this induction type of turbo noise.

Anyways, just wanted to share my experince...

                        Alexey

Induction howl or Drone - Ive had enough!

I have the howl but I have had it on a D22 Navara, Patrol and Prado. I consider this normal induction noise when cold and under part throttle.

Edit: my turbo forester did it cold too.
