  • HD lovells in rear or med ...???

    Pp

Am getting a Lovell bilstein combo in the coming weeks....
Going hd in front for bar and dual batt + winch but wanting feedback from anyone with these springs for rear end thinking med. and poly air or hd in rear ????

Have engel 40l + blk widow drawer system in and on occasion tow CT tonne would this be enough to warrant hd or would it harden up the rear too... Much

What is the diff in ride what have others experienced from this combination

Any advice would be great thanks

We sell suspension to a number of people with a range of setups and would recommend the med for the rear with an airbag setup. this will give you the best of both worlds in respect to ride around town when not loaded and towing and also the handling of the weight when loaded up.

If it were OME I'd say definitely HD due to the draw system.
However the Lovell bilstein combo seems to produce harsher/higher lifts... so hmm... hopefully someone with these brands can comment.

I had HD Front, MD Rear Lovells combo initially but for me after I fitted a set of Black Widow drawers and fridge slide it was a too soft, and when loaded for a trip it was definitely down in the rear. I replaced with HD Kings (actually ordered Lovell's and got Kings) which when unladen are definitely to harsh. The Kings free length is also are not long enough and come loose at full droop.
As my Prado is only for play and touring it is ok, but it would be too harsh for a daily driver.
I know the spring rates for the Lovell MD and HD springs but have not been able to confirm the Kings HD rate to see if they are higher than the HD Lovell's.
If you leave the Engel in all the time and its not a daily driver would definiely fit the HD springs though.

Rear ride height with HD KIngs is currently 800mm rim to flare with the drawers partially loaded with tools etc, with the MD Lovell's and NO drawers ride height was 780-790mm from memory.

I've had Lovells HD springs in the back and MD in the front for over 120,000 ks and I've replaced my first set of HD's in the back with another set.
Have now swapped out the MD in the front for HD now that I have steel bar and winch.

I do carry a load most of the time... cargo barrier, shelf system and most of the time a Waeco fridge.
Possibly a bit harsh when unloaded but I've never really been bothered by it.
I did drive a VX 120 D4D the other day and it felt like a limo in comparison

            Thanks for the feedback

So drawers and black widow system and engel but not a big load all the time and I'm still wondering about md in rear and air bags or hd in rear straight up

Based on some additional information I now have I would recommend fitting Lovells HD springs.
I now know that the Lovells springs rates are medium duty 214 lb/Inch & heavy duty 266 lb/inch whereas the Kings are 300 lb/in & 380 lb/in respectively.

Those rates explain the ride and load characteristics I have with the HD Kings compared with the MD Lovells previously fitted, a massive change in spring rate. The HD Kings are great when fully loaded (and I mean loaded lol) with the boat connected as well but by any measure are too harsh for a daily driver in my opinion.
