  • 3 Door Exhaust Mods or Chip added?

Have any of the 3 door 150 owners changed their exhaust system or added a chip of any kind?
I am considering doing one or both to my SX to give me a bit extra torque for towing (subject to the Minister for Finance approval).

    Regards

Pretty sure that any of the threads on chips will apply to the 3 door as well as the 5 door, I'm goin to take mine in to replace the standard muffler with a sports muffler today, will see how that goes, $180 as opposed to over $1k.
From my observations of the standard exhaust it is a consistent 61 mm right through and appears to be mandrel bent stainless steel ie no crush points on the bends, with the new Lukey muffler the only restriction now will be the particulate/ catalytic converter.
Should at least let it breathe better towing the van up North tomorrow.
    Kev,

Had this done last week for $130. Worth it. 60% reduction in turbo lag on takeoff and a 0.8 l/100km improvement in fuel consumption so far.

      Very happy.

Smakb I'm thinking of heading down the same path. Sounds like you are happy with the decision, and a bit cheaper too! What do you mean by 60 % reduction in turbo lag? It spools up quicker, obviously, but how do you come up with 60%?

Is there a difference in sound? And noise?

          Cheers

I have just put some notes on my rig build which might explain, but when you take off from a standing start it took quite a while for the turbo to kick in, which was a pain if you are pulling into traffic. Now the turbo kicks in before the back wheels are into the intersection.

No noticeable difference under normal driving conditions, maybe slightly more turbo whistle, but not really noticeable with windows up. Seat of the pants dyno tells me that the lag down low is less and have a feeling that engine is running more freely needing less throttle than before to maintain the same speed, nothing scientific just how it feels, unfortunately will be heading off towing a van tomorrow so can't compare fuel economy yet. For the $180 spent it seems to be better value than a full system, that said only a dyno would sort the feel from the real.
Definitely a mod that gets my tick and great value for the return and no adverse extra noise to attract unwanted attention.

See my rig build up thread for a part number for a Redback muffler to replace the stock muffler.

Mine was a Lukey straight through, not sure of model number, but much smaller than the original, cut off main muffler and then welded in the smaller straight through with a short extension pipe to fill the gap between the end of the pipe and the smaller muffler, had to fab some new hangers to suit the smaller muffler.
Very straight forward job for the local exhaust fitter (learnt long ago to pay someone else to do exhausts)

I can hardly tell the difference from stock noise, maybe alittle harsher under load.. But you will be impressed !

Who do people recommend using in Brisbane to install a new muffler?
I've rung three places and they all want to sell me a full 3" exhaust, saying just a muffler won't make any/ much difference.
                              Cheers
