  • Heavy Engine Oil Consumption

    Hi there,

My 11/07 1KD D4D seems to be consuming quite a lot of engine oil, any clues as to what I should be looking for?

Doesn’t seem to blow any blue smoke, so can’t be being burnt up?

Runs smooth, with very little rattling under the bonnet.

    No obvious oil leaks anywhere.

    Cheers,

    Tony

How much is quite a bit? Could be in the intake manifold from a stuffed turbo seal. If it was a big leak, you'd see blue smoke out the back.

Mine's starting using a bit too, same thing no smoke runs and goes well. When i bought it it wasn't using any so thinking it could be i'm using different oil to the previous owner. It's not much though, around 3/500mls every 5000kms. I'm going to see if it settles down after a few changes.
      Cheers.

300-500mL isn't much so I doubt you'd notice any blue smoke. I'm pretty sure that from the bottom mark to the top mark on the dip stick is 1L.

If you do 10000km oil changes, does the engine burn more oil between 5000km and 10 000km?

I noticed on my car from new that if I left the oil for 10 000km, it would burn some oil after 5000km. This was probably due to the oil thinning from fuel dilution or oil break down. When I change every 5000km, I don't notice any consumption. It's normal for every engine will burn a small amount of oil past the piston rings.

Change oil and filter every 5000km, just slowly drops after around 2500km or so doing alot of km at the moment (1200km a week) just started using oil last 2 changes.

              Hi Guys,

Mr Toyota's been doing engine oil "consumption tests" for last few week, loosing 1.5L/700km

Truck's in at Toyota now with injectors being removed, no doubt to assess the pistons - hopefully not pistons or rings or worse still big-end bearings!

Has 100,000km on her so still "new", this shouldn't be happening!

Read this link and now very afraid:

              http://www.ohwhatalemon.com/

OMG, I hope its not as bad as sounds like a lot of grief and bucks, what is it with cars today, reliability seems to be a thing of the past!

                Update

Mr Toyota called to say they've 'not see this sort of problem before' and 'think its internal to the engine', possibly cracked piston/s!

They think the crakshaft and the cylinder head are okay - V. EXPENSIVE items!

                Using up 2.7L/400km - that's a hell of a LOT of oil!

Not feeling too well at the moment.

A new short motor is $4800 from Toyota - just had one installed in my car. Plus injectors. Just over $11k at 73,000km.

                    Thanks ##########,

I am not feeling too well about this at all - I see big $$ going out the door - I've got to say Mr Toyota is being very open and frank with this, they almost seem apologetic!

Sounds like 1 or 2 pistons are cracked as they reckon the bore looks okay and big end is as you say over engineered as only Toyota know how.

Fingers crossed that Mr Toyota does the right thing!

Mr Toyota reckons the injectors are fine as I was of a similar view to you, dribbling diesel on a hot cylinder head not good!

No contact from the all day today, they offered for me to come in and take a look once they’d stripped her down – not sure I want to!
                      Cheers,

My son dropped in on Friday to get his gym key off the key ring, she was up on a hoist with all 4 wheels off (not sure why), engine was out and upside down, parts all over the floor – I haven't heard from them now for 4 days now, too afraid to call them myself!

Initially, they did say that I could come in and take a look, but as I said they haven’t been in touch since last Wednesday.

You're right the Roo, they were very puzzled as to what could possibly have gone wrong, but seem to know that it was internal – with the injectors out I assume they could inspect the pistons and bore, which they said looked okay, hence the intrigue as 'injectors are fine'. They seemed to think either 1 or 2 cyliners were cracked or rings broken as she is using up so much oil - I said that the fault probably lead to the EGR failure which they replaced a few months ago, they said 'yes that's right'.

They told me that 'it hasn't been' "dusted", which refers to a failed air cleaner allowing dust to get inside the cylinders causing abrasion.

I get the feeling that they’re waiting for Mr Toyota to advise a suitable course of action?

Interestingly, no estimate of cost has been talked about at this stage, just the comment that the ‘Toyota Motor Corporation Australia is likely to meet some of the cost but as out of warranty not 100%’. She has a solid service history by Toyota, including the dealer that’s investigating the failure.

Appreciate your advice and support the Roo

                        Cheers

                            D4D Update

                            Hi Guys,

                            Today's update:

I contacted Mr. Toyota who returned my call.

They stated that "the engine looks to fine", no cracked pistons no split rings, no scoring to cylinder head and doesn’t appear to have been "dusted". "All 4 cylinders look the same and there's some indication that oil has been getting into the combustion chamber as there is burnishing in the bores".

They are sending the block and pistons off to a specialist to measure and check the bore, piston, and ring sizes to see if they are all within specifications - "piston-to-bore ratios".

They stated that 'there's no point putting larger pistons or rings in if the bore is warped and clearances don't measure up'.

They can't fathom what's gone wrong as "these are rock solid engines".

As I suggested, they are going to discuss with the previous owner's Toyota dealer that serviced the car to see if they can shed some light on it.

I asked if it was a manufacturing fault and they said that they couldn't be sure, but felt sure this wasn’t a normal wear and tear issue.

I asked if I could come and see the engine and they were only too happy to show it to me, Friday is the day.

                              My Dead D4D

                              Update on my D4D:

Piston-to-Bore ratio is 7thou out, from the look of the radiator she's been sucking in what looks like cement dust!

Option to rebuild the engine with oversized pistons and rings or replace the entire lower half of the engine with a "closed block" – $3.5-4k

All up with new heavy duty clutch kit and labour around $8,000 - gotta be careful what you buy hey!

Mr Toyota has been great, even let me in the workshop plus let me take photos – she has a good service history with another Toyota dealer, sort of makes you wonder?

Should get her back next Friday, if I can find the money to pay that is!
