  • Cold start noise 2006 Diesel

Anyone have a problem with a knocking noise a bit like drumsticks played on metal at start up.

Only occurs on cold start and intermittently (may go a week no noise then 2 days in row) and lasts for about 1 minute. Car has done 149,000Ks, all 3 belts were replaced at 129,000 (done 20K) and noise started about 5,000 ks ago. Regular oil changes and filters at recommended periods have been done.

Toyota dealer reckoned it was a belt problem, and greased with rubber grease? and nipped the belts up. That was Friday.
This morning (Saturday) the noise is back, louder, sounding more metallic and lasted double the time of previous events.

The noise is loudest at front of engine and seems low down.

I have a recording of the noise (mp3) of about 3Mb. but don't know how to post it - Can anyone help here?

    Any suggestions please

    thanks in advance

A big thank you ##########. The engine is a 1KZ-TE. And has Toyota extended warranty for another 1,000km or 26 April 2012.
I will chase up the dealer pronto.
If I do have problems with current dealership (considering they felt it was the belts and suggest that I keep an eye on it) any suggestions for warranty work in the the Inner West of Sydney.

    thanks again

Hey Max, did you get this issue identified? I'm getting a similar intermittent noise (bucket of marbles down the oil filler). Have not had the rig long enough to pinpoint the source, and I have not owned a diesel before.

I'm wondering (to all), would the idler gear problem go away when warmed up? Or is a rattle that goes away when warmed up more likely to be injectors? And what is it that's actually failing with the idler gear? Shaft? Bearing? Or just the whole assembly? Please excuse my ignorance.

I did some ringing around (Perth) for idler gear parts. Local auto spares place rang a Toyota dealership. There is no complete assembly kit, you need to order all the parts that make up the whole. Ex Japan. 4 weeks. $400. I got the same response ringing a different dealership directly. If anybody knows an outfit in Australia that might stock this stuff, I'd love to hear about it.

      Thanks,
      Gork.

Clackity clack, clackity clack, is that the noise? I could all most guarantee you that it will be the belts or belt, (air con.belt) experiment with a bit off soap on the belt first or spay a bit of water on the belt while the noise is present. I tried rubber grease as well but the noise comes back even worse, of late the noise doesen't seem to be there. But I do know it is the belt.

I had a Nissan Patrol work ute, the same thing I thougt the air con. compressor was going to fly to bits, like little hammers in it. It was just the belt, and that was years ago it's still going just changed the belt.

If trying to diagnose belt probs, use talcum powder rather than anything wet or slippery: and especially the rubbish they sell as belt dressing! It will only come back worse. If powder quietens them down then a new belt is in order if tensioning up doesn't work. May even need to break the glaze on the now beautifully polished pulleys.

Thanks guys. Yeah - clackity clack it is. I did a LOT of listening today with some aluminium tube and a funnel. It's not injectors. Isn't the idler gear. In fact there's no bit of metal I can find that's transmitting the noise. I guess it's one or more belts. Good news.
