  • Hesitation in 1st/2nd

    Greetings from Prague.

So - in case it doesn't show up at the bottom of my post, I have a 2003 Toyota LC120, 3.0L diesel, standard transmission, about 150,000 km. I bought it about three months ago - it has spent its entire life in Prague. According to the records, the injectors were replaced in 2008 by the local Toyota dealership, no doubt due to the known injector issues.

I've replaced the air filter, and will get around to the (single, under the hood) fuel filter soon.

I've read about all the carbon build-up in the EGR, manifold, and elsewhere, and will get around to cleaning both of those (have ordered several cans of Wynns EGR3). Am also currently running through a bottle of STP diesel fuel system cleaner.

Here's the problem - when letting the clutch out, I have to make sure the revs are up around 2000 before fully letting the clutch out. If I don't, the clutch engages, but it stays at idle speed for a few seconds before the power suddenly kicks in (doesn't matter if I floor the accelerator - no change in speed for several seconds). I then have to put the clutch in again, rev the engine, and try again. The same thing is true for second gear, if I shift before I have enough momentum and high revs, the engine just seems to idle. I can floor it, and nothing happens for several seconds. People behind me are getting a little irate.

I thought perhaps I have a clutch problem - but if that were the case, I'd be able to rev the engine when the clutch is engaged, and the vehicle wouldn't go anywhere. That's not the problem - the problem is the hesitation before the throttle responds.

So, I'm going to change the fuel filter and clean the EGR and manifold. Can anyone think of anything else that I should definitely check? I'd hate to go through all that (even though it needs to be done) and still have the problem. Is this indicative of the injectors needing replacement again already?

    Thanks,
    Clive

Could be fuel problem or turbo, the engine needs turbo boost to produce
any sort of power, if for some reason the turbo won't spool you will not
    develop any power.

Leigh - you know, that sounds reasonable; it does seem as if I have to gun it to get the turbo to spool up. If the revs aren't over a certain level before I engage the clutch, it takes a while for the revs to climb to the point where the turbo kicks in.

If that's it, is there anything I should be looking at? Anything serviceable?

      Many thanks,
      Clive

        Hi Clive,

I'm assuming its a variable vain type the same as is used here, I seem to recall
reading about problems with the servo motors seizing up, have a search through
the 120 engine section and you should find something.

Possibly Toyota might be able to diagnose also.

        cheers

Also check out the EGR discussions as there is a pretty detailed description on how the
          turbo dumping works in there.

So, I managed to clean the EGR valve finally - still had the hesitation problem. Disconnected the EGR - still had the problem. I now have a friend who has suggested replacing the SCV valves in the fuel pump.

First I had heard of these replaceable valves - apparently, Toyota would rather sell the entire (expensive) fuel pump rather than offering the valves - but somehow they are available. Will give it a shot and see if that makes a difference

i could be barking up the wrong tree here but , does the diesel have the electronic fly by wire throttle that the v6 has . this is where i would be looking . it doesn't sound to me like a turbo or fuel system problem or you would notice it out the exhaust and at other throttle settings and in general performance . i know in my v6 the car is slow to respond from idle at low rpm because of the fly by wire throttle system . this can be adjusted in some vehicles to make them more responsive . before replacing pumps or valves id be taking it to someone with good diagnostic equipment or you could be throwing money at the wrong problems .
03 grande v6 , with added stuff that makes it go places . RTFM people !

Well, you could be right obviously - I do think that it uses the fly-by-wire system. I'm seeing the same dead spot at least in 1st and 2nd gears (at lower revs)... and it could also be there in other gears but I'm not noticing it because of the momentum. In any case, it's with the mechanics as I write, so we'll see if the SCV valves are the culprit. It would be interesting to know how many people ended up replacing the entire pump in the past when all they needed to do was replace these valves.

So that didn't work. Rather an expensive "let's see if this works." Getting a little concerned now about my upcoming drive from Prague to the coast of Wales.... but given that it seems to be fine at higher revs, I'm not sure how concerned I should be.

Does anyone have any pointers as to what can be checked in the fly by wire throttle? The mechanics said that when they changed the fuel filter, there was a a lot of crud in there - their next suggestion is to have the injectors cleaned...

My car isn't on the recall list for the washers or the sump pump - it was manufactured just a few months before those on the recall list. Nevertheless, the injectors were supposedly replaced in 2008; how long are injectors supposed to last? Am debating whether to have the oil pan dropped to take a look at the sump - my understanding is that if it's clean, there's no need to worry about the washers on the injectors. Nevertheless, if this hesitation is caused by dirty injectors, and if I don't have them cleaned before we leave, could that do serious damage to the motor?

                    Appreciate any thoughts....

Jesus. After all that it was the MAF. I disconnected it, and it went like a rocket ship. Have now used some WD-40 to actually clean it, and reconnected it.
