  • Hard clutch pedal.....6 speed

Hey PPer's i did a search but could not really find the info i am after, the clutch in my 08 D4D 6 speed seems really bloody hard..........also it is engaging/disengaging on the lower end of the pedal travel........Now i took maybe a dozen manual 6 speeds for test drives and to be honest i was not overly impressed with the clutch feel in any of them...........is this a prado thing or what.........i have a 2010 colorado for work and its clutch is way better........much lighter.

    Whats the go?

It is not normal to have a heavy clutch pedal (Even though it appears to be normal on a Prado due to its bad design!). This is due due to the thrust bearing dragging on the gearbox input shaft sleeve (Nose cone). Alloy is not an heard wearing surface and this causes the pedal to be heavy! Also causes the clutch to ride and gives an in-consistent clutch pedal.

If you can hear a load grounching sound coming from the gearbox when working the clutch pedal with the engine switched off then it is the thrust bearing dragging.

      Cheers

I have driven mainly manuals for a number of years now and most of them have been sportier cars with heavier duty clutches and I haven't found our Prado's clutch any heavier! It does "squeal" a little when it's about 3/4 depressed- maybe dust in it??

Thankyou very much mate ........i now understand..........well looks like open heart surgery to fix this........I'll look into some type of speedy sleeve first.......there should be one avaliable to stop the gawling of the alloy..........years ago i had an old Torana with the 4speed box and it had the same issues.........back then you could replace the thrust carrier over the input shaft.......how easy would that be!

Dan, if you find a speedy sleeve type set up, would be very interested. I have check with cbc and cant supply anything, also tried sourcing from the us but only sell petrol prado over there and their box is different.

I've been told by a toyota tech that the prado clutch are firm. I thought the same thing, coming from a d4d hilux the prado was alot heavier. Mine has bad shudder and the take up is right at the top of the pedal so its about stuffed. The dealer i bought it from (jacob toyota) have been really good about it and have sent me a new clutch kit. The new clutch is a excedy and are supposed to have a lighter pedal feel than the tojo clutch. Will report back when it's fitted.

                Gday azzss

When you take the gearbox out take note of the condition of the in-put shaft nose cone!.. (Can only be replaced by replacing the whole bell-housing as it is a all one casting) It will have distinctive wear marks on it where the thrust bearing has been dragging/sticking/grounching etc. (remember to thank Toyota for making an in-built spare part and job creator).

When you have cleaned the nose cone back to a smooth surface again make sure you use graphite powder to lube the nose cone and not grease.... Grease will attract more dust and dry the grease out and make it drag again.... Graphite powder is a dry powder and is slippy as all hell and doesn't dry out like grease as it is already powder. (Don't get any of the graphite on your clutch disk if you choose to use it).

The hard stainless sleeve is the ultimate option if one can be found.

PS: the clutch pedal is supposed to have a 5 to 15mm max free play (I chose 5mm) which can be adjusted at the back of the pedal.

Here is a link on how to adjust the pedal

                  Cheers and thanks.

                        How didit turn out mate?

I'm currently talking to a mate about machining a piece up...........we need to get the box out first and do some measuring.........We also need to have a look at the existing thrust bearing inside diametre and see if it can be modified or replaced........a speedy type sleeve can be fabricated and slipped over the cone after it has been repaired.

Had clutch fitted friday, and it's alot lighter to use but i wouldn't say it is 4 cyl car light, just alot better than it was. The clutch that came out wasn't as bad as i thought fairly worn but not stuffed but it had heaps of shutter. I asked about the thrust bearing/shaft issue and they put teflon spray on the parts said they have done heaps of hilux's and prado's and had no dramas (toyota dealer). If it starts getting heavy again i'll know why
                          Cheers

                              Gday azzss

I am glad to hear that your clutch is lighter and smoother. (It makes a difference in the traffic).

Will be interesting to see how long the Teflon spray lasts?

                              @ D4Dforme!

Quote: I'm currently talking to a mate about machining a piece up...........we need to get the box out first and do some measuring.........We also need to have a look at the existing thrust bearing inside diametre and see if it can be modified or replaced........a speedy type sleeve can be fabricated and slipped over the cone after it has been repaired.

Answer: I also would be interested to here about this one as i am sure that i will need to do the mod to mine in the future.

                              @ stewy!

Even though you asked Azzss about how many K"s his car had done before his clutch started playing up i thought i'd also add mine

I first started complaining of clutch judder to Toyota @ 42K but the clutch was not changed under warranty till i finally reached 52k as the clutch pedal also became "very" heavy and gave a distinctive grounch noise with the engine switched off. (Toyota could not ignore it any longer).

                              Cheers
