I've owned our current 2006 deisel (pre D4D) for a couple of years, and when I fill the sump as per the owner's manual, it's plenty over full on the dipstick, I saw the workshop foreman at Torque Toyota, North Lakes, he said the dipstick is accurate, put 6.9 litres in, still overfull. I now get it serviced at a small workshop, (good one) and he says go by the book, you won't hurt it. I ran trucks for 40 years, and always filled by the dipstick reading, anybody else experienced this?

Have had a twin screwed boat with 8V92's that had different sump sizes 22l for one 27l for the other, just for something different. Nothing to do with a 120 though.
