  • Coming/Leaving Home Lights

    Hello everyone!

I just have installed windscreen washer nozzles, or however they are called... from a Toyota Hilux Surf, (from Lexus GX also fit) and this is a unbelieveably convinient cheap upgrade. These nozzles make the water sort of a drizzle on a windscreen instead of two randomly pointed jets.

So I thought I'd move on with these convinience upgrades on my 2008 TLC120. Now, as I live in a developing country and we do not have streetlights in some rural neighbourhoods, I thought of putting comming/leaving home lights feature, like the ones that mercs and other new cars have. For those who do not know - this is if you leave the car with the key, the headlamps stay on for a certain amount of seconds, so that you can see where you walk.

Now question: does anyone know how can I turn this into reality?

    Thoughts:
when you turn off the ignition, the sidewindows buttons turn off after 30 seconds unless you open the drivers door. What if I find this and put the same into headlamps plug? Some sort of a fuse or something.
However though, if you open the door, headlamps cut too. I wanted to avoid that and have a timer for 30 seconds or so.

    Thanks,
    Timur

    Hi Timur
If you are pretty handy with autoelectrics you could fit one of these http://db.hella.com.au/cgi-bin/catal...w&flmaint=2700 or get an autoelectrician to it for you.

Good find Ades, thanks. Now I need to work out how to connect this and start when the ignition is off and the door is opened. Anyone has been messing with this electrics, so that I can at least start looking at it?
I am no familiar autoelectrics, but sort of know electrics in general.

Have you tried looking at jaycar electronics? They do lots of handy DIY kits that you may be able to adapt to your needs

It might be a straight replacement, I'll have a look tomorrow at mine and let you know. We use these at work on some equipment but in 24v, this one simply holds the off function for the amount of seconds that you set it for.

Looking at this, it will not be quite as simple as it sounds - and the additional circuitry required to integrate that relay into the system to work as you want it is complicated.

If you have a spotlight circuit, might be easier to swap the relay into that circuit?

As for the opening the door activation - diving that deep into the toyota wiring seems risky...

Good website there, Justin. However, I am quite far away from Aus, so this would be abit pointless to order such kits from there. But we have a few small shops with such DIY kits. Hope to find there some sort of a timer, like on jaycar.

Before that, though, I have to find out what exactly do I need to assemble this and find where exactly under the bonnet should I put this. Still researching.

                  Here you go Timur,
All you need to do is add a standard 4 pin relay and the Hella timer relay plus a fuse and you have headlights that will remain on until the timer times out. If you want to turn them off in a hurry you could turn off the headlight switch as the headlights are controlled by the headlight relay (by the body control module) and the headlight switch.

You could use one of the methods on http://www.the12volt.com/ i.e a relay and capacitor, but the hella relay above is easily adjustable from 0 to 900 seconds of delay whereas you would have to keep trying different caps to get the delay you want.

Any questions feel free to ask.

That was a classic. I was reading through thinking this would be great to have as it is handy if they stay on until say you hit the lock button on the keypad or timer of 60 secs.

But then I get to the bit about just buy a sensor light for your house and i fall off my chair in the office laughing.

Got a few strange looks but thanks guys for cheering me up on a Monday.

lol i know a light sensor would've been a much easier and cheaper solution. however, the task is different. long to explain, but a car timer is what I need.

Thanks Ades, sounds not that complicated. Will try to find this Hella timer closer to where I live and then try this on prado. Thanks again!
