  • Tuning Modules

I have been thinking about buying a tuning module for the D4D. Various mag articles all seem to have a different story to tell. Has anyone bought and had a good result ?

Do some research through this forum on items like "Chip IT" and "Steinbauer". I have the Chip IT product and it goes like a rocket, has heaps of torque, but the jury is still out on any fuel savings claims.

I have a DP Chip and find it great! Definatly notice the difference, although if you drive it hard to the new power and torque you probably wont see a fuel saving

I have the CHIP-IT module with EGT (and 3-inch exhaust). Pretty dam happy. Some dyno results are up on my build page. They ARE NOT the best results possible but still good. If it was a cooler day with more time I expect they would be far better again. The build page gives the facts.

Just as matter of interest I just placed a Steinbauer chip in the for sale section to suit a 2004 non D4D auto, came from my brothers prado which he has now traded on a Mazda 2 (don't even ask about that one - no he's not a hairdresser!) he was full of praise for it and really noticed the difference after he had it removed. See the ad and PM if interested.

I have used a Tunit on a number of European common rail diesels, mostly VW's, and found them good and I liked the adjustability. Makes it easier to control excess smoke. I think the main thing is to de restrict the exhaust. I am thinking of removing the standard silencer and fitting a straight through absorbtion type as a first step rather than the whole exhaust replacement.

What kind of diesel owner wants less smoke?!

I have just fitted a roo system chip and 3"exhaust on my D4D.Very happy with the system the module has 9settings it's set on 5 at the moment while I see how it goes on fuel consumption. Overall though I love the extra grunt and thats more interesting to me then fuel usage. at the moment anyway...

Have a DP chip in my 2003 old style non common rail oiler.
Has been is for the last 40000 k's and is a valuable addittion when towing the 2+ tonne van. Fuel consumption is better, but maybe because I have toned down the lead foot a bit as well. The extra power on hills and overtaking is worth the cost, for safety value only.
Have been using 400 to 1 mineral 2 stroke oil in fuel as well for more than 40,000 k's and the fuel pump noise is much quieter and very noticable when not adding to fuel.

                        Hello
Have any of the members here in Perth had a tuning chip and exhaust conversion done by United Injection Service? They have quoted me about $3.5K to do the job on my 08 Prado and I was wondering if those that have had it done are happy.
The did some work for me some time ago when I had a Jeep Cherokee and they were good.

I have ordered a TDI tuning module from the UK. $500 landed here. I will report on its progress.

                            Hi All,
Just thought I'd add my 2 cents on this subject.. I recently installed a Steinbauer on my 2003 1kz. What I have found is a noticable increase in lower to mid range power, plus it pulls a lot harder in higher gears. I installed an earth switch too that turns the unit off if/when required that allows the engine to revert back to 'factory ecu control'. On the standard setting the unit worked ok, but ramping up the dial obviously gets things going a fair bit better, although keeping egt's in mind. I am yet to tow the camper since the install but think there will be a big difference just on 'seat of the pants' feel. A week before the Steinbauer went in I had a Sterling 3inch dump pipe and mandrel exhaust installed, which made a huge difference in the way the engine revved through the boost range and also gave it an easier time when winding out above 3500rpm (not that I ring its neck but before the exhaust it would struggle to get to that sort of rpm). I got an egt port put in at the dump pipe, it probably should be installed in the exhaust manifold but for ease at the time of install its downstream of the turbo... The whole cruise control issue with the Steinbauer is its down fall, the cruise still works but the SB unit is not functioning as it reads the throttle signal from the fly-by pedal unit. This wont bother me much though, I figure I'll just put the boot in if needed while cruise control is on. So, dollars wise, it has cost me $1300 for the Sterling exhaust(fitted with the egt port), and $1415 for the Steinbauer which I fitted myself(about an hours work if you solder and run wiring through conduit etc, if you used scotch locks it could take 20 mins). My advice, do the exhaust first as you may just be happy enough with the improvement from that alone. My neighbour has the same model Prado with SB unit and a 3inch dump and standard toyota exhaust (he has posted on PP before in regard to 3inch dumps, he actually made the pipe himself), we are going to compare results in the near future to see if doing the whole exhaust is necessary, or whether or not just doing the dump pipe has similar results and therefore would save people dollars. I will post again once the egt is in, just for reference of temps, and once I tow I will post what I find. Fuel consumption, well I expect it will not be any better. After all, these units rely on injector pulse width variation which means more fuel. The reason I went for the SB, after a fair bit of research was the renowned name, TUV certification(build quality and severe rigorous testing certfication), and these ease of disabling the unit, either by switch or by simply unplugging which then reverts back to factory ecu control.

                            Regards,

                            Dane
