  • EGT Installation

Thought people maybe interested in how I installed my EGT gauge so here's a couple of pic's.

    Head unit

    Thermocouple

The thermocouple is held in place with what is best described as a hose clamp. I went with this style as I didn't want the expense or inconvenience of having the exhaust modified to except a screw in thermocouple. Besides when finances permit I intend to replace the exhaust with a new full system that should come with the boss already welded in.

The head unit fits nicely in the blank (after modification) next to the Hi/Low switch in front of the shifter.

You need accessory, power to power unit. This was easy in my case, as when I installed my dual battery system I ran extra power wires for accessories like this.

As yet no report as to what temps it runs at. I'm towing the camper up to Singleton for the Tuff Trucks next week end so will know more then.

The gauge and thermocouple cost me $107 delivered off Flea Bay (US seller). My dads been running the same unit in this 200 for 18 months now with no problems so I'm confident with the unit and thermocouple fitting.

Overall an easy installation for the home mechanic, that wants to know the ever important exhaust gas temperature.

I like that method for mounting the thermocouple. Makes it very easy on the standard exhaust.

Ok so I've towed the camper to Tuff Truck and back, and have established that it is easy to exceed 500 degree C by just trying to maintain the speed limit. Good to know as my Prado spends most of it's time towing, so now I can now adjust my driving style to maintain safe engine temps. Sometimes I think it's better not to know what's going on, as now I need to watch both the EGT and the auto temp. Both need driving adjustments to ensure they stay with in safe driving limits.

At the end of the day I'm happy to adjust my driving style to ensure temperatures stay safe. I only post this to advise others what I have observed under my driving conditions. Doing so I hope helps others to understand what their engine is experancing during simalar conditions.

            Hi There

Please excuse my ignorance but what is the benefit in monitoring the exhaust gas temperature.

                Hi Brendon

The exhaust gas temperatures are a far more accurate way to measure what your engine is doing rather than the temperature gauge. Particularly over fuelling issues or where you have fitted a performance chip.

                cheers

I just finished installing my EGT gauge. Hardest part would have had to have been tapping the thread for the probe. There is hardly any space to do it on the dump pipe. I did it but taking off the cover inside the drivers side wheel. Gives you direct access to the dump pipe. But once that was done everything was fairly easy. Looking for power for the gauge under the steering column also took me about 10min. Make sure you have multimeter when you do it.

Its pretty cool now to have a gauge monitoring exhaust temps when im towing. What does everyone have there alarm on and what is considered as a "safe" EGT for the prados?

Had similar fun installing the EGT probe on my old Patrol as I forgot to get Genie to add the mount when they built the system. I would regularly see 450 - 500 degrees in normal use and remember sitting on 600 degrees from Newman to the Karajini turnoff in the Pilbara, towing a full size van into a strong head wind, was in 4th gear and slowing down and downshifting ( the usual cure for high EGT) didn't help at all.
I wouldn't want to see anything higher than 600 though.
That said when I was doing my apprenticeship at TAFE, we got an old Mack 6 cyl turbo to glow red from the manifold through the turbo and about 2 ft down the dump pipe by loading it up on the Dyno. You can see similar watching any videos of diesel tractor pullers.

This is to mob I brought mine from. At the time they listed packages that included the probe. I'm sure they sell the probes separately just check their other listings. If you go the way I did just make sure you measure the exhaust and order the correct size. I think mine was a 2 - 2.5 inch clamp.

Sorry for the very late reply.

But yes that is the clamp I used, and yes a standard probe is then help in place by the clamp.

Sorry, pictures didn't download--did you give a thought to putting the probe before vs. after the turbo? (I am referring to discussions on some of the performance chip proprietary literature/websites and impact on temperatures reads). Do you have a performance chip (other than your foot?!)
