  • Fuse Warning (reversing lights Trailers & Caravans)

Hi all, First Post, 2008 D4D Auto, not sure if this has happened to others. Reversing lights on caravan caused the fuse that protects this circuit to blow. This in turn disabled Indicators, A/C, ALTERNATOR plus other minor circuits. Yes one fuse protecting a minor circuit disabled major components. The only indication of a problem was the illumination of the Check engine light on the dash. We were camping so Subsequently a Tilt tray ride from Canungra to Toyota Nerang (thanks RACQ). The response from Toyota was a surprise...."Yes we are aware of this issue we have a service bulliten covering it". Their solution.. disconnect the reversing light lead from the trailer plug and reset error codes. $116 Bill. Fuse in question, IGN 1 No 2, 10amp. Questioned Toyota as to why I had not been informed as I purchased new with Tow bar. Not a safety issue was the reply. It would have been a safety issue had it happend eariler when camping in the Out-Back. Not Happy Toyota

I have blown the same fuse twice - I just put it down to the trailer (borrowed from the landscape place) and unhooking the trailer plug while the prado was running. But when it happened to me I just replaced the fuse, left it sit for a while and the check engine light didn't come back on.

Its happened to one other member previously, might be worth looking into one of the following:

      1. placing an additional in-line fuse in the jack compartment in the rear of the prado on the offending 12V supply. If rated correctly, the new fuse will blow without affecting the critical electrical supplies.

      or

      2. finding where the offending trailer supply is tapped from and running a new separately fused supply to it.

Not a major mod i would think, would certainly correct any future issues - surprising really that toyota has the relays in that comparment already to prevent flasher issues and the like but have the supply fed from that circuit.
