  • Spring & Shock Brand Advice

I need to replace the springs & shocks on my 90 series Prado V6.
It currently has the original units fitted and they are well past their use by date! I don't do any serious off roading, most of my driving is going to and from work once a week, which is a 550km trip each way. The last 70km of the trip is dirt road, the rest is all highway. The dirt road is normally in good nick, but has lots of clay and can get a bit slushy after rain. There are several cattle grids and sometimes a few washouts that slow me up a bit. Those of you familiar with the Broken Hill area will know the type of surface I'm talking about.
Can anyone offer advice on the following products I have found on ebay. I have read good stuff about the tough dog gear as well as good and bad about Ironman.

I can get a good deal on Pedders gear through a friend, but I am yet to price it up.

Smally both of questions have been done to death, maybe a bit more research through the forum on your part will answer your questions, plenty of reading in the 90 section and or the 120section for tyres.

Fair call, was looking for slightly more specific advice on the right setup for the type of driving I do though.

            Blupac

            Hi Smally,

I bought the 'Blupac 35mm lift' springs and shocks set for my 90 series late last year. I received:
            - 2 Ultimate shocks
            - 2 Blupac shocks
            - 4 'raised' Lovells springs, the invoice read '50mm lift'

I have been very happy with them to date. I look forward to their first beach chistening 24-25th March on Bribie.
            Cheers, Mark.

How is the ride after fitting them? I ended up putting Pedders gear in mine and find the ride very harsh, especially over sharp bumps. It rides like a Falcon with low profile tyres!

yeah 2" lift is more harsh, should take a some time to set but once it has should be better.
Otherwise you could go back to standard springs if you don't need the height for bigger tyres.

I hope it improves. It was always harsh on sharp bumps and I thought it was due to the worn out original Toyota shocks. When I pulled them out they weren't that bad. The bounce rebound has improved, but I think I need to go to a softer spring perhaps?

I ended up putting 2" lift, EFS into my 90s only a few months ago. Originally I put HD in front and rear. I too experienced a very harsh ride especially over sharp bumps. On a long trip I ended up lowering my rear tire pressures to soften it up because it was so uncomfortable. I ended up replacing the rear to a "comfort" style spring and keeping HD in front due to steel bull bar. The ride improved greatly!! and it seems to be getting better over time (3000Km). The sharp bumps still dont get fully soaked up and I dont think they ever will. The main difference is it doesn't seem to bounce/kick anymore (go kart style).. My only comment to your problem is to start with the rear springs first if you decide to replace for softer. Also try lowering your rear tyre pressures to about 28-30 psi and see if to ride improves (short test). It might give you an indication to where you might start first.

                    Good luck.

                      Thanks Zepp.
I run 32psi all round at the moment, pretty sure the front is the culprit with my harshness. The dirt road I travel on regularly has several cattle grids that tend to get a bit undermined on the leading edges due to traffic. I estimate the edge of the grid would stick up approx 60mm on some of them and it jarrs like hell even at 70kph.
Will try the lower pressures one end at a time to pin point if it's the front or rear doing it. Not that I really want to be playing around with tyre pressures on my way to and from work, the trip is depressing enough already!

I had a 90 series a few years ago with Pedders springs on but used Billies shocks the ride was really good not hard at all.

Hmmm, I have found my ride more comfortable since the Lovells / Blupac 2" lift. Then again, I also greased the front swaybar's urathane bushes at the same time. Seems the installer (before I owned the car) put the bushes in dry, so they gripped the sway bar hard, and virtually inhibited the front suspension. No wonder the ride was crap.
Admittedly the (2" lifted) ride is a bit more comfortable again with about 200kg on board, excluding the driver. But overall I'm quite happy with the ride, cornering, etc.

my experience is that the pedders stuff can be a bit harsh to start with and can take a little while to settle down. Once settled and worn in a bit I find it more than suitable for how I use the prado.
If you have the pedders part numbers I can give my thoughts/experiences as I've had a go with pretty much each spring type before I settled on what I have now
