  • So, I want to test my battery/fridge combo....

....but I would like to remove the aux battery form the car, give it a full charge and then plug in the fridge, full of drinks and see how long before it goes flat. I may do a few rounds, at different temps, set on the fridge.

    Now the questions....

    1. Once I disconnect the battery from the car, what else do I need to unplug or disconnect, so I do not short anything or is just wrapping/taping up the battery terminal lugs enough?
    2. What is the best level to discharge my 75Ah deep cycle battery to, dead flat, or around 11.9v? I have had conflicting advice on this. My fridge has a selector switch to choose when to cut out, 10.3v, 10.0v and 11.3v.

    Thanks in advance, team PP...

Insulating the battery terminals well and securing so they don't get caught
in any moving parts should be ok.

You should not flatten the battery to dead flat as it will greatly reduce its life span.

Discharging to 11.9V (measured with small load applied) is around 60% discharge
and quite safe. I run my down to around 11.6V, and still get a good life span out
    of my batteries.

The below table (courtesy drivesafe) and colours show it all:

I was also interested in the same but after a battery going kaput in about a year I was more interested in knowing can my Prado charge it. The battery was replaced under warranty (different brand 105amp I think) so I have been watching my recharge voltage readouts.starting around 14.04 up to as much as 14.14 but then prgressively dropping down to around 13.6 or even around 13.4. Most people tell me it needs to be over 14 and after checking the Prado connections etc I resorted to asking a mechanic at Toyota when I was in for a Prado service. He said it is working correctly if its anything over 13. So now I am considering one of leighs voltage booster diodes but am paranoid about what may go wrong when it is actually charging at over 14 (plus the extra a diode will bring). It sometimes does sit over 14 especially at higher freeway speeds. Mine is petrol not diesel. I think we have to know how long before you need to recharge, but also need to know you can effectively recharge it. In my case I noticed the recharge voltage drops considerably more when air cuts in and seems more concerning than when ipfs are on (providing engine is running) Will be interested in seeing your results.

BTW I did same as you suggest, disconnected aux, taped it all up but noticed recharging voltages remained same as when two batteries connected

Leigh, i have that chart saved on my iPad and refer to it, and recommend it all the time..
I'll wrap it all up and tie them down, but as long as I do not have to remove or disconnect the isolator, I'm happy.
I'll change the switch on the fridge to 11.3v cutout and see how we go.

PradOz, I have one of Leighs voltage boosters and it does increase the charge rate up to an average of 13.6 or so...
I cannot test it fully while driving yet, just the multi meter on while engine at idle, but I am looking at the 12v meters from DSS, one for each battery.
For the price, IMHO, the voltage booster is one of those things it is better to have than not... but that is my opinion.
I used to remove it when car was in for service and put the normal fuse back in, but gave up after I forgot once and Toyota did not notice..

If both batteries have a reasonable charge state disonnecting one will have little
affect on the charge voltage. The alternator operates as a constant voltage source,
it will try to maintain the same output voltage for a given temperature as its load changes
as long as the output current doesn't exceed the alternators maximum output.

If you connect a flat aux battery across the the charged cranking battery the voltage
will drop a little for a short time due to the inrush current into the flat battery. The amount
            of change is determined by:

The regulation accuracy of the Alternators regulator.
The resistance of the vehicles wiring.
            The alternators reserve current.

            Cheers

Leigh - keeping in mind my Prado 120 is petrol 2005 grande and that it does charge irregularly over 14V but normally mid 13s would you anticipate any issues in me fitting a booster? Also how long for andat what voltage would you consider I need to start worrrying if 1 was fitted and readings were >14V. Both batteries are in excellent condition now. My average trips are just 10 - 20 kms twice a day with longer journeys now and then.. I have a VSR + fitted voltmeter from Derek @ ABR so can watch voltages on either battery as I drive. I think you have my email if you prefer to talk that way, I don't want to hijack Steves thread, unless you think others will benefit from your answers, thanks mick

Does anyone know what the Low, medium and high voltage cut out levels on Waecos are set to, I'm wondering if setting mine on low is flattening my battery too much and hence shortening my battery life after reading Leigh W's post.

Justin - from memory for the older Waeco fridges with just two settings (HIGH or LOW) they are 11.5V at HIGH and 10.4 at LOW

as i said thats from memory so happy to be corrected. I am getting one of Leighs boosters and will see how that goes. Pretty cheap way of ensuring the prado is charging at high enough voltage. cheers mick

JUSTIN: with the help of google this came from myswag forum:

"the cut out voltages: low is 10.4v med is 11v high is 12v according to the manual"

and this too if you or someone else needs it:

"Also check the error light if it flashes once every 5sec then this is the low voltage error, also taken from cf series manual"

BTW, iF you want an easy way to increase cable size to fix voltage drop, and also fit both a hella socket and cig socket with a push button switch for use when ignition is on or off at waeco low voltage cut out then use a Waeco product called a CoolPower RAPS12R-U2unit. These are normally $119 but i noticed on the Waeco web site they have them on sale at moment for limited time for $75 (plus postage or free to pick up). Noticed they say there are only 4 left at this price. I reckon with a little wheeling and dealing you could get some locall retailers to match this price if they wanted a sale.

                    http://www.getawaeco.com.au/default.asp?id=355&catId=6

They are very easy to fit, can be fitted to either battery, even the main until an aux is fitted and then you just relocate the battery connection from main to aux providing you dont cut the cables short. They come with everything you need and are so simple to fit and use. If you wanted to you could also remove from your prado when upgrading and then fit to next vehicle. I have had mine in my old 90 series for many years before upgrading to the 120 where i simply removed and refitted it. Definately worth a look. Engel also make one to suit their fridges but not sure of their cost . I have seen the engel ones at repco -

also on the waeco site are the universal fixing kits for the fridges down to $20 from $99. they are new, superseded by a new design that hinges to fold flat. pretty sure you could cut these $20 ones down and fit a piano hinge to obtain same result for a cheap outlay. Better suited to those with older style fridges that never came with the handles to tie that people use to tie them down.

                    http://www.getawaeco.com.au/default.asp?id=124&catId=6

when on waeco site just click factory seconds, then special offers to see these and other waeco stuff.

                    cheers

As an alternative to the Waeco fridge kit - I stumbled across a fridge wiring kit in ARB today 6m of 6mm twin core with fuse holder, ring terminals and power socket all connected up almost ready to go for $52!! - wish I had seen it before I bought the cable and terminals and socket all sepearately last weekend - it would have saved a lot of hassle and been cheaper!!
